CM: San Siro pitch in ‘great difficulty’ and the issue could get worse

By Oliver Fisher -

Around about the same time every year a similar issue seems to pop up regarding the state of the pitch at San Siro, and the start to 2024 is no different.

Calciomercato.com recall how the alarm was sounded by Simone Inzaghi after their dramatic victory against Verona last night, after which he said: “San Siro is in great difficulty at the moment.”

The field has worsened significantly in recent weeks, weakened by the sheer number of games that both teams are playing, and of course not helped by the seasonal factor which makes grass harder to grow in the winter.

In the space of just over a month, from 9 December to 14 January, ten matches were played at an average of approximately one every three days.

➤ 9 December: Inter-Udinese
➤ 12 December: Inter-Real Sociedad
➤ 17 December: Milan-Monza
➤ 20 December: Inter-Bologna
➤ 23 December: Inter-Lecce
➤ 30 December: Milan-Sassuolo
➤ 2 January: Milan-Cagliari
➤ 6 January: Inter-Verona
➤ 10 January: Milan-Atalanta
➤ 14 January: Milan- Roma

The supercoppa in Saudi Arabia will provide some breathing space, and the staff will have to take advantage of the week without matches to get back on track, but then the same issues could arise again looking at the schedule to come.

➤ 27 January: Milan-Bologna
➤ 4 February: Inter-Juventus
➤ 11 February: Milan-Napoli
➤ 15 February: Milan-Rennes
➤ 16 February: Inter-Salernitana
➤ 20 February: Inter-Atletico Madrid
➤ 25 February: Milan-Atalanta
➤ 28 February: Inter-Atalanta

Even from 11 to 28 February the Meazza will host six matches in the space of less than three weeks, two of which – the 15th and 16th – are on two consecutive days.
