CM: Paulo out, Paulo in – the truth regarding the Sousa-Milan speculation

AC Milan have not had the best of starts to their new era, and Paulo Sousa’s name has been mentioned as a potential emergency solution if results do not improve.

As Calciomercato.com write, there have been some rumours floating around – albeit not from very trustworthy sources – that Sousa could arrive to take Paulo Fonseca’s plan in the event that Milan collapse against Venezia, Liverpool and Inter in the next three games.

Despite the usual denials, there is no doubting that Fonseca must engineer a turnaround in results and the Champions League game plus the derby are certainly good starting points, but what if it doesn’t come?

What is certain is that, in the event of a possible change in head coach, the hypothesis that leads to the return of Stefano Pioli is absolutely not viable despite him having contract with Milan that runs until June 2025.

Daniele Bonera is not a far-fetched solution, even if the will of the club is not to touch the hierarchies of the Milan Futuro project which they have invested a lot of time and money into, with stability being important especially in year one.

What about Sousa? He too ticks a lot of boxes like Fonseca does. He is good at working with young players, he does not demand too much from those above him and he has a style of play that he wishes to implement.

Sousa himself in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport in recent days highlighted how it was not easy for Fonseca to take up Pioli’s legacy, underlining however the Portuguese coach’s ability to adapt to different environments and managing star players.

“Paulo has always adapted to every type of place, from Shakhtar to Roma. The mercato was excellent, so he will fight until the end for the Scudetto,” he said. It was an endorsement of what Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani achieved in the summer window.

It might also seem like a public expression of a desire to coach a team of Milan’s level, but Sousa is currently working at Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai Football Club. He would not remain insensitive to a possible call from Milan, yet we are not close to that point yet.

    1. I would love if we hired Xavi but he simply doesn’t have the persona that the ownership/management want as he is far to open mouthed for their taste.

        1. Making things up ? If anyone on this website is foremost interested about facts its me so you clearly don’t know what you are talking about here. Xavi was planning to leave Barca last season and then reversed his decision to then be relieved of his duties a month later or something. From what that came through the channels it was because he had been critical of the management. If Cardinale didn’t like Maldini demanding for better investments to take the next leap do you really think they would accept Xavi doing it or what ?
As I said though I would love Xavi to join us though.

          1. Total BS, you and your ilk made up that Maldini was fired for asking for more money. He was fired because he couldn’t renew a Netflix subscription let alone a contract or close a deal to save his life.
            FACTS

          2. Nope Nelli he was most likely sacked because right after the semi final exit he said in an interview that the club needed to invest more to take the next leap. Simple facts that he said that.

          3. Nelli, Also the reason he couldn’t renew a lot of our players was that the wage cap was lower than currently but that wasn’t Maldinis fault was it ? no it wasn’t as that was down to Gazzidis and Elliot management as he had to get an accept from above each time he dealt with increasingly higher salary demands from players so basically it was out of his hands.

          4. Dude Milan have spent almost 200M on transfers since RB took over. There is a settlement agreement in place that limits spending. Using your own logic, Maldini was fired because he wanted Milan to spend more which would violate the settlement agreement and get the club banished from Europe. See how you twist the narrative to fit your agenda (Americans are bad). Maldini hit as much as he missed with player scouting and was a terrible businessman he was offered a different role but was too prideful. Get over it.

          5. No Im’ not saying they are bad as I’m more in between but i wasn’t saying that he demanded hundreds of millions either he just wanted more than the annual 35 mil and made it clear in that interview that I mentioned. Fact is after he the season he was fired we had earned over 100 mil in cl + improved advertisement deals that was doubled.
Milan spend a lot last season because of the Tonali sale so in the end we spend 40 mil on top of that.
This year we run with a minus of 37 mil and we have some pretty much guaranteed sales coming next year.
Do you see it or not or what as I’m not the one twisting things here and as I said I’m more in between whether the ownership is good or bad. Pioli also made it clear in an interview that he was always in a dialogue about transfers with mmm so good and bad falls upon everyone if anything but that isnt really the question here though.
In the end I’m not twisting anything here, simple facts just as he right after the cl semis said in a live interview that the club needed to imprve its investments, simple facts again.

        2. There is a difference between throwing players under the bus and throwing the management under the bus.
Let’s see if Fonseca actually says one day that the management didn’t bring him quality players or that they have to invest more in the squad if they want better result. The last man who did that was thrown from the bus.

        3. @Uberhulk, sorry, those players through themselves under the bus. How do you get beat twice for goals as one of the fastest LBs in Europe? Why can’t Leao ever press? You think Conte would have tolerated that? Fonseca rightly benched these spoiled “stars” and then they throw a hissy fit but not participating in the team talk during a hydration break. Are you kididng me? If I was one of their teammates I’d be livid.

  1. Not to be too gloomy but after the dismal start we got to the season I currently has a difficult time seeing how we wouldn’t get battered in at least one of the two fixtures against Liverpool or Inter but I’ll nevertheless hope that we can turn it around from the next match and the we then regain some momentum and confidence.
When that is said I have my doubts that the management is already contemplating sacking Fonseca as it would turn out to be a costly affair to have to pay a third coach. If they actually were to sack him then I doubt that there is any other options than Bonera but obviously that could change if Pioli joins a Saudi club.

      1. Well if we cant win over Venezia this weekend then I might actually take a hiatus from watching AC Milan’s matches in the coming weeks because that is simply gonna be too painful to behold.

        1. Same at some point. No point in watching something that makes you feel a landslide of negativity. If I wanted that I’d watch politicians argue ya know?

          1. I generally will finish watching AC Milan’s matches even if we are losing with 1 or 2 goals but if we cant get a win in our first 4 fairly easy matches in Serie A assuming we doesn’t win on Saturday then I can only imagine how badly we will get hammered against Liverpool and Inter and I’m not gonna watch us getting annihilated either so its a possibility.
To be fair political debates can be interesting to watch and certainly more than us getting beaten 4/5 – 0.

        2. Martin get ready to because this Furlani management has derailed Milan saying they only invest in 20 mil or less when other successful clubs are willing to spend to get great players Milan get what ever other teams through out.

Furlani and Co. should be sacked! Moncada has been said to be the scape goat, but in reality it should be all of them.
Cardinale should sell to the Saudi’s , and he now is left holding the bag.

          1. I do believe that we will win on Saturday and hopefully with some margin but the following two matches doesn’t leave me with much confidence but its still not completely impossible if the players actually starts to show what they are capable of.
Well I also think everyone is up for question but I will nevertheless still rate this mercato 6.5 even though the only transfer that has left me excited before the start of the season was Pavlovic.
I cant say I’m too fond of that idea.

    1. They even say unreliable source. Then they write on it. Then folks on here act like it’s gospel. The cycle of trash SM produces. This website is like a more garbage Star.

  2. “the hypothesis that leads to the return of Stefano Pioli is absolutely not viable despite him having contract with Milan that runs until June 2025.”

That’s a complete lie. There’s no reason he could not return.

  3. There’s something with us and not going for good managers. Only good option that has been named so far is Sergio conciecao he’s shown that can actually win trophies with winning manager of the year in Portugal a few times

    1. The management doesn’t want ambitious coaches. They ask for players and investments, and wont stay if the management doesn’t match their ambition.

  4. No one is getting sacked…whatever had to changed has already changed stop all the speculations, one or either two inclusion in january if needed else changes are over for this season an Milan will do ok, Good days are coming

  5. It would be a disaster if Milan replaced Fonseca with another foreign coach like Paulo Sousa. But nothing would surprise me from these non ambitious owners and the clueless people we have in management.

    1. I don’t think it’s gonna happen.
It will simply be way too costly for the management to be dealing with 3 coaches contracts simoultaneously (Pioli is under contract with us, Fonseca and now another ?). If Fonseca were to be sacked, I think the replacement is either gonna be Bonera or turn back to Pioli.
Of course things can change if Pioli finds a new club.

  6. Milan is already paying two coaches. I don’t know wha sort of epic disaster this club would have to be hit by to actually take on a third coach…

Outside of Top 4 by Christmas?

  7. Milan are not serious. So you can sack Fonseca & bring Sousa? Nawao. Can’t you go for a better coach? Tuchel & the rest are all available & you are still goin for Sousa. I’m not into heartache anymore, bring anybody you like is your own cup of tea. If u bring Sousa I’m done with you guys until you are ready. Bue

  8. Nelli you’re clown, your mommy is a clown,your dada is a clown,your granpa was a clown,your granma was a clown…you’re a yankee muppet,jerry’s ass licker

  9. “albeit not from very trustworthy sources”

Yep, mindless speculation from some “journalist” trying to get clicks.

On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised if our management went for a HORRIBLE choice like Paulo Sousa, instead of a GREAT choice like Conceição, because they seem to have a predilection for selecting the worst possible solution – just look at them hiring the utterly mediocre Fonseca when Thiago Motta, De Zerbi, and Conceição were available.
