CM: The two reasons Milan allowed Napoli to sign Lozano

AC Milan held talks over a move for winger Hirving Lozano this summer but pulled the plug for one reason, a report claims.

Six players ended up arriving in the recent mercato; namely Theo Hernandez, Rade Krunic, Rafael Leao, Ismael Bennacer, Leo Duarte and Ante Rebic on loan.

There were of course links with a number of players who didn’t arrive – such as wide duo Everton Soares, Memphis Depay and Angel Correa.

However, director Paolo Maldini recently revealed that talks were held over the signing of Lozano from PSV, and now Calciomercato.com have offered some more background.

They state that Maldini and Zvonimir Boban were in talks with agent Mino Raiola for the Mexico international, however there were two key reasons they decided not to proceed with the deal.

First of all, the costs involved – which include a €38m plus bonuses price tag plus the commission required for Raiola – were deemed too expensive for the club’s hierarchy.

In addition, Maldini and Boban did not see such an investment necessary for a player who may not fit head coach Marco Giampaolo’s 4-3-1-2 system – one which players without wingers.

With Milan stepping back, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis swooped and managed to seal the deal despite late competition from PSG.

Lozano scored a goal on his debut for the Partenopei against Juventus earlier in the season.
