CM: From Theo to Calabria – Milan’s stance on four key renewals

Whilst the mercato opens shortly, AC Milan must prioritise extending their current players’ contracts, otherwise, they risk weakening the squad themselves.

Contracts and renewals have been a hot topic in recent months, given a few of the key members of the squad have expiring contracts. Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan lead the list, and Davide Calabria’s deal is also a topic of scrutiny.

The latter’s contract expires in the upcoming summer, so it would be understandable if that deal had a higher level of priority. However, this is not the case with Milan preferring to look at the French duo’s deals instead.

This morning, Calciomercato.com gave a roundup of the current situations, and there are some positive signs.

During the international break, Theo’s situation has been spoken about heavily, especially after his red card in Florence. Questions are asked about his requests, but above all, when (or if) he will sign an extension. However, there is hope.

The Frenchman’s agent confirmed that the defender wanted to extend his deal at the club, and whilst there had not been a direct conversation between the club and his agent for several months, there have been conversations with the player, which have gone positively. The report suggests that Giorgio Furlani will summon his entourage soon to offer a €6.5 million salary.

With the other key Frenchman, things look good as well. His return to his best has encouraged the club to speed up negotiations, and his salary should double to reach €5 million partnered with a four-year extension.

Matteo Gabbia’s deal should also be extended within the next few months, and there is a positive feeling felt by all parties. The Italian defender should get a five year renewal, including a salary increase for his added importance.

Finally, there is Calabria’s situation – which is considered ‘the most urgent’. At present, the Rossoneri do not seem open to negotiation, therefore, a farewell is seemingly on the way, with the club unwilling to renew his deal on the same terms. The outcome should materialise towards the end of January.

  1. Yeah. Cthulhu forbid calabria keeps 2M net. It could bankrupt the club.

Meanwhile the likes of ruben and chuku getting 4M net while contributing little to nothing is fine. They’re foreigners after all

  2. i cant believe money is an issue with the Calabria renewal. my guess is, they want to get rid of the captain (or at least keep the possibility as long as they can) so they can hand a special incentive to Theo/Mike in their renewals. anyway, other players which i think should be worked at: Cuenca (expires end of the season); Bartesaghi, Liberali, Scotti (all expire 2026 but could be a lot harder to extend next year).

  3. if they release Calabria but keep royal it’s beyond stupidity,
Calabria isn’t great but he’s not bad player, he’s home grown, never complaining even as rotation/ backup.
jeri hatred to Italian is confusing,
i don’t know what Milan mafioso did to jeri’s grandparents in the past but please stop ruin our great club.
