CM: ‘Total stalemate’ – why Milan and Calabria have had to freeze renewal talks

By Oliver Fisher -

Despite being the captain of AC Milan, a strange summer is underway for Davide Calabria as he awaits signs from the management regarding his renewal.

According to Calciomercato.com, Calabria is perhaps not experiencing the most peaceful period at present. On the one hand, the management are working on the market to buy a new right-back and on the other hand his deal expires in 11 months.

At the moment – despite the excellent relationship between the parties – the negotiation is in ‘a state of total stalemate’. While working to get to grips with Paulo Fonseca’s ideas, Calabria doesn’t know if he will even be at preseason next year.

Calabria has repeatedly reiterated his love for the Rossoneri shirt and his desire to renew his contract but there is too large a distance between the offer and the demands. Milan want to extend his deal but keeping the current €2m net per season, therefore just changing the duration.

However, the captain considers himself ‘absolutely deserving of a salary increase’ from the club, who would like to extend only until 2027 and not any further. The request from Calabria’s agents has not found any opening from Milan.

The parties have decided to stop the dialogue for a period of reflection that the full-back hopes will lead to a solution. Moncada has asked the player’s entourage to resume negotiations after the window has closed, a decision that leaves room for many interpretations.

In all likelihood, the management do not consider Calabria worthy of a pay hike because he has remained at the base level of performance and/or simply lacks constant growth.

    1. And what quality does Cala provide for Milan? Other than the fact that he’s homeground player? He’s just so-so.

      1. Has been a central player in the club’s turnaround, a key part of the Scudetto squad, marked the best wingers in the world out of games, and all round legend?

He’s the club captain and symbolises the club.

If you don’t support him you don’t support the club.

        1. See this is our problem.

You always evaluate a player based on their PAST performance.

He is slightly higher than average RB – RIGHT NOW.

He is not bad when he plays in his natural position BUT last season, he decided to play wherever he wanted in most of the games and he got his natural position exposed in too many occasions.

Because of that, there is no suitors for his service at the moment.

Based on these factors, Milan offers a contract with terms unchanged.

His market value is in decline, he is not improving. So… How the f** you expect Milan to pay him more??? Like honestly. Imagine you run a business and you have an employee whose performance is in decline but he is loyal to your company. WILL YOU GIVE THAT EMPLOYEE A RAISE JUST BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN WORKING FOR YOUR COMPANY FOR LONG TIME??? Hell no!

Having 5-10 good games per season doesn’t mark your season off as ‘good’ season, you know.

You also said “If you don’t support him you don’t support the club.” – I don’t support HIM, I support AC Milan.

If a player’s performance drops, I criticize the player and demand the board to bring someone better. If a board itself is a dumbass, then I criticize the board and demand them to sell the club to someone who is more ambitious. We don’t and should not symbolize anyone but the process.

          1. There are really a lot of ass eaters among us in here who support whoever comes into charge with power, regardless of what they are doing to the club. Tomorrow if somebody comes into power and start to downgrade the club, they support them and push fans to support them. They look like zombie citizens of North Korea. These are type of ‘fans’ who are our actual enemies.

        2. Oh boy, what a total BS. Your words make me laugh so hard. I support this club far before Calabria was born. I didn’t say Calabria is bad, I said he is so-so, mediocre. Period. So, he could and should be replaced with the better one.
And yes, I didn’t support Milan past players who didn’t deserve to, like Origi, Bakayoko, Huntelaar or other well-known players who didn’t play as they should in Milan’s standard. Yet I still support AC MILAN, even in banter era.
In case you don’t understand the difference between supporting the club and supporting the player, contemplate and use your little brain properly.

      2. He has offered the quality of being a top 3 RB in Italy in the past 5 seasons or so. Maybe he wasn’t the best but was always up there with the best in the League and he was never given a salary even close to what players who hardly even played get. This management just has a habit of exploiting players who love the club and paying them far less then what they deserve.

        1. Bro you gotta open your eyes. Calabria is not a bad player but he is not the answer for Milan at right back. Not even close.

Full backs have become extremely crucial to the way modern football is played, and Calabria’s biggest problem is that uw does not fit into this setup. He was unlucky to be trained at brought up in Italy while they were still many years behind the curve, so he plays like a full back from 29 years ago. He does not have the speed nor physically that a modern full back needs. Every time Calabria faces a somewhat physical attacking winger, he gets completely bullied. And can praise him for covering Kvara all they want, but I don’t measure players on the occasional great performance. Rather, we need to look at their level through a full season. And here, Calabria is simply too uneven in his game. And totally wrong as Captain for this reason

        2. I don’t know where your standard came from. Oh right, he’s playing for one of the best club in Italy. With him at RB, Milan stood on 2nd place last season, so he must be 2nd best RB in Lega Calcio. And with your standard, I believe he will be Gli Azzurri’s captain very soon.
But, he symbolizes Milan. Well, symbol can be changed too.

          1. The standard comes form statistics from past seasons. In some seasons defense wise he was even the number 1 RB in Italy. Football is not just all about scoring goals and assists, Fonseca himself said last week that you can’t have both full backs going forward tactic wise. And that’s what a lot of people don’t understand and why they think Calabria is bad just cause he dosent scores or assists like Theo on the left.

      3. He has had the best defensive numbers in the club for the past 4 seasons. And twice best in the league. Do you have any better suggestions?

    2. As for Origi you thank Maldini and Massara for that stupid decision especially since Origi was injured and not even a starter at Liverpool.

But RLC deserves every penny of his 4m. So Moncada and Furlani were right. Calabria

      1. So RLC deserves 4mil for having 4 good games in 30+ matches. But Calabria being among the top RB in Italy for the past 5 seasons doesn’t, nice. RLC is not even in top 20 mids in Italy right now.

    3. Calabria isn’t worth more than 2mil. Boris he captain material. Nor have his performances improved any during his tenure. Nor did Maldini advocate for a better contract for Davide.

So a pay increase for what exactly? I’d phase him out altogether and upgrade on the RB. Thanks for your service.

    1. You’d give a salary hike to a player thats in a decline? J don’t see his performances getting better. There not.

      1. I wouldnt say decline. but this is his ceiling for sure. He has been basically the same for a while. As a mathematician, i’d say he’s pretty much average with the odd good defensive performance. So, what’s the avg salary of a RB and pay that. No need to compare with Origis, Leaos or Primavera guys. He’s average, then what’s the avg pay. done. lol. too heartless?

        1. He is a bit on a decline, but he was never rewarded in the past when he picked and he never complained for being on a low salary in the past. So that plays a role too. He can give us another 3 good years i belive and 3 or 3.5 mil should be decent.

  1. 2 mil is the right offer.
He should be lucky he isn’t offered less than what he is currently making, since he offers less and less every season.

  2. Calabria should be more reasonable. He is not particularly a very sought right back in the market right now, wasn’t international for a while (although Di Lorenzo was very bad this last Euro) and wasn’t particularly stellar last season. 2M€, maybe 2,2M€ is about right.

  3. Watch out Calabria going to Inter next year on a free to replace Darmian, Marotta has probably already started working on that.

    1. yeah, going from Dumbfries to Calabria sounds like a wise move lol…

Calabria will be a free agent next year and deservedly so. Then, he will join Real Madrid like Mbappe…. oh wait

  4. If the club was convinced he’s the best option at RB we’d already have a renewal, and there would be no talk of signing Matty Cash, Emerson Royal, etc. Clearly, they’re not convinced. So, it makes no sense to offer him say 3.5-4M and 5 years. That said, Calabria isn’t the worst RB in the world, and he did come up through the youth sector and he is captain. If it were me, I’d take a middle ground here, and offer him a slight increase and the shorter term, so like 2.5m until 2027. That way we have a known quantity at RB, not not locked in for so long that if we do find a cost effective improvement in 2025 or 2026, having Calabria still on the books would not be financially onerous.

  5. Don’t bullied calabria, if you dont like he get salary increment, then just leave it. every night he read this site and your comments. He loves all of you and this club. 😊.

  6. Calabria deserve more than 2million atleast with bonuses or sell him than disrespecting with 2m slalary for club captain.
he has done good job against some worldclass players. If everyone thinks he is slow not excellent going forward, then the player you want does not come for 2/4m salary but they are paid 8/10m minimum.

You can sell him if you don’t like him than disrespecting with low salary.
