CM: Why Milan need further exits after Kalulu to bring in more signings

By Oliver Fisher -

Pierre Kalulu will soon complete a move from AC Milan to Juventus after finally giving the green light following a period of reflection, but his exit alone will not be enough to free a spot for another signing.

According to Calciomercato.com, Milan’s is to try to complete the squad with at least one more signing, with Manu Kone the number one target. Before being able to make a move for him or any other ‘foreign’ player, the directors will have to tackle a much more important problem: the squad list rules.

The regulations for compiling the squad lists for Serie A and the Champions League are mostly simple and also very similar, but it is worth nothing that the one for the league can be modified over time, but for the Champions League amendments can only be made in January.

They must both contain a maximum of 25 players each, at least four of these 25 players must be trained in Milan’s own youth sector and at least another four can be trained in the youth sectors of other Italian teams. In essence, out of 25 slots, a maximum of 17 players can be from non-Italian academies and over 22 years of age.

Up to now and with Kalulu still on the list, all 17 slots have been filled by Maignan, Tomori, Thiaw, Pavlovic, Kalulu, Theo Hernandez, Bennacer, Adli, Loftus-Cheek, Reijnders, Chukwueze, Pulisic, Okafor, Leao, Saelemaekers, Musah, Jovic and Morata.

Kalulu’s exit makes room for Emerson Royal to join the list, but in view of the next match, we will already have to deal with who will have to make room for the inclusion in the list of Youssouf Fofana, a 25-year-old who came from France and therefore will have to be in the 17.

Looking at Fonseca’s latest call-ups, it should be Yacine Adli who makes room for him, thus remaining excluded from the squad lists and a candidate for a sale in these days of the mercato. However, Pobega cannot be the player who makes room for him (although he could also leave) as he is home grown.

So how can Milan make room for Kone, Tammy Abraham or any other last minute idea? The answer must be found in the list already delivered to Serie A. The leading candidates are Ismael Bennacer who has a market in Saudi Arabia, plus two forwards in Luka Jovic and Alexis Saelemaekers.

  1. Lowkey we are clowns for not going for Retegui and Brescianini… 2 goals each in first game, and I think they will shine even more under Gasperini. But nooo Jovic ffs and Pobega that’s what we have

    1. That doesn’t make them a better player and good fit for Milan.. Scoring 2 goal in a match doesn’t guarantee they wont flop for the rest of the season..

Jovic has been a flop before he started scoring important goals towards the end of last season mostly from the bench and that doesn’t make him a good striker worthy of Milan number 9

    2. We are clowns for letting go young players without a right to have them back. We are clowns for letting go a good young center back for so little, Simic. We are clowns for not getting Brescianini back, keeping Maldini in the squat, we are clowns for not getting back a right back like Bellanova, and so on….
We are clowns for not getting a coach like Gasperini, that has been successful in seria A and has been competing in European football.
Well, we are clowns at the moment. I don’t want to be pesimist, buf i worry that’s why I said what I said and in a way I partly agree with your statement, but I do not want to name our players and bash any name. I hope the team gets better.
      Forza Milan

  2. Didn’t Ibra say we were done with signings after Fofana? We could sell a few players but I think we are all good with signings unless they want to bring in Abraham.

  3. Adli and Bennacer seems to be the most likely candidates to go to make room for Fofana and Kone. If they fail to sell Bennacer, I guess Kone wont come.

On a side note: If we end up with Fofana, Kone, Reijnders and Musah for the double pivot thats a damn strong lineup for those two positions.

    1. Might be a strong line-up. But are we going to shift out a strong line-up every 2-3 season, even before the team can establish?

  4. Honestly after seeing Bellanovo go for 20 million to Atalanta I really wonder what this management is doing. Like 3 million more and we would have had a good RB and a homegrown player.

  5. Atalanta gonna be title contenders this year. Its gonna be crazy tight for chl spots. Hope all italian teams do good in europe so we can have an extra chl spot next year.

  6. This is getting messy. All the calls to sell Calabria & Pogega. What over 23 ex-academy players are you going to replace them with?
Now we are supposed be selling Terraccianno to Como.
Will be lucky if we can register 22 players for both comps.
And that includes having Florenzi (gone for season) Sportiello (gone for 3 months) occupying 2 spots.

I don’t love the idea of Chiesa. We don’t particularly need more wingers. But at least he would occupy a national trained place.
