CM: Why Paqueta is succeeding with Lyon and the reasons Milan don’t regret his sale

Lucas Paqueta appears to be excelling with Lyon since his move last January but AC Milan have no regrets over the decision, a report claims.

As Calciomercato.com writes, Paquetà left Milan ‘with his tail between his legs’ after an offer of €20m from Lyon in the last days of the transfer market that was seen as a sigh of relief by everyone; the club, the fans and probably the player too.

At Lyon he arrived to general skepticism but immediately imposed himself and in a few months has became one of their most important players, scoring 6 goals and providing 3 assists in 27 games.

The report adds how one of the reasons why Paquetà was unable to demonstrate all his potential in Serie A was the difficulty his coaches had in finding him a position tactically, as he was tried virtually in all midfield roles; as a mezzala, as a trequartista and on the wings.

He was criticised for not being physical enough to play as a midfielder, not incisive enough to play as an attacking midfielder and not fast enough to be a winger. Instead, Rudi Garcia has integrated him well into his 4-3-3, with Thiago Mendes and Houssem Aouar complimenting him in a high-energy trio.

Paquetà has found the environment easier too, as Lyon fans are not used to winning as much as Milan supporters so it is less demanding, while the press Lyon play is not as demanding as the Rossoneri’s, plus there is no ‘€38m price tag’ looming.

Paquetà has exploded and in the last two league games he has scored two goals and an assist. However, we cannot speak of a regret for Milan as per the source, as the technical, tactical and environmental conditions of the Italian league were not suitable for enhancing him.
