CM: Zero goals, zero wins – Milan Futuro suffering despite encouraging performances

Milan Futuro were always likely to have growing pains in their first season in Serie C, but there is some worry about the lack of results and above all the lack of goals.

As Calciomercato.com write, Daniele Bonera’s returned from the away game at the Stadio Romeo Neri in Rimini with an undeserved 1-0 defeat. They were on top throughout the game, they hit the crossbar through Mattia Liberali and yet the end result was zero goals and zero points.

Daniele Bonera fired a warning after the game that good performances must soon turn into wins otherwise there will be trouble in the table. The objective that the management set since the birth of the project is about growing young players, yet staying in the division is an obvious minimum.

The path foresaw initial difficulties that have promptly materialised with two draws and three defeats in the first five games. It would be wrong to press the panic button just yet but there is a sense of responsibility to start getting some wins.

However, having Francesco Camarda and Liberali available more (after a couple of senior call-ups) plus Hugo Cuenca and Chaka Traorè is good news, meaning Milan Futuro must do better in front of goal having scored zero times from open play.

        1. Lol, I was about to say: 10-15 years ago Bonera was the “Calabria” of today for lots of fans. The comments were on Goal.com then, before it became EPL.com.

          1. To be fair when Bonera arrived from Parma he wasn’t a bad player but as time went after his injuries even I wanted him to leave. If I should compare Calabria to anyone it would be to Abate and I always liked both of them when most didn’t 🙂

    1. I believe some of the boys (Jiménez Liberali for example) can give a helping hand to the first team and grow themselves along more along the way. Nothing have proven that they cannot play 20 to 30 minutes against likes of Venezia and Cagliari. They’ve at least shown a be lot of positives in the games we’ve actually seen them played even though people are likely to point out that those are friendly games. But those are the only facts so far. If you want to imagine that they would fail, I can just say that our attacking midfielders and most fullbacks have so far mostly failed anyway. Relating the Futuros struggles as a reason that the youngsters are mot ready to be given a chance with the first team, do people think that even the first team’s best player will be singlehandedly winning matches with a team that’s generally not good enough? Just because the Futuro is not winning doesn’t necessarily mean that no players are ready there.

    2. Maybe if they were introduced slowly to the first team v thrown into a lower league where they get their legs broken?

  1. For about 30m we seem to be learning that Primavera is not well placed as _the final_ stepping stone to the first team.

Good info. But we already suspected as many make statements about the size of the jump.

Now we have Futoro and all these talented youngsters have a place to further develop so that more of them are more ready.

    Thanks Gerry (bring it Rino)

    1. Milan has always produced players. A few years back, Paloschi was hyped like Camarda then vanished. Former academy players currently playing in Serie A include Bellanova, Colombo, Maldini, Brescianini, Pobega, Gabbia, Locatelli, Cutrone, Calabria, Cristante, Petagna, Verdi, De Sciglio, Darmian. Of course there is also Donnarumma as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. So it remains to be seen if Futuro will help develop these players or if it’s just some way to generate cash by farming kids.

  2. Amazing. Barca seem to have 17 year olds playing on their juggernaut in La Liga. Some of these kids looked great in the preseason. I know it’s the preseason but you play to the level. Would love to see camarda zeroli and Liberali some minutes on the first team.

      1. It’s great to see them on the bench and hopefully we can see more if them at the moment and of games because we are in control.

Experience on the first team with speed and physicality brought back to Futuro increases speed and physicality in training etc etc.

I’m taking it as a sign this is intentional with the Zeroli minutes! Here is hoping.

        1. To be fair players like zeroli and camarda has been training with the first team since last season so they do get more and more aquainted with the older players and it is for the best to play a bit here and there for each team.

  3. This is completely wrong example. Yamal played just 1 match for Barca B.
    Gavi — 3 games
    Pedri — 0 games
    Cubarsi — 9 games
    Fermin Lopez — 5 games
    Pablo Torre — 3 games

    Should I continue?

Oh of course our great talent developers know much better I guess than Barca how develop young players. Right?

    WRONG!

Dont you see what is goin on here? Its all about money and they take us for fulls. They dont need no home grown players! They want capital gain and buy more outsiders so agents make more commissions and kickbacks to the management.

    1. Dude, the must play always. In process of selection, many, many much better players than those who are the best players of today are lost. But that’s how players be crated. To have homegrown player, you must have academy first. And, if there are no some rules from the league and uefa, no one would actually invest in homegrown academies.

      1. What are you talking about exactly? We don’t have an academy? Remember our primavera twice UEFA league finalists. Barca primavera didn’t play in those finals. What we dont have is a will of our management to let our young player be on the field with first team. They sell them the minute they show they can, like Simic. Who playes Anderlecht first team now every match! Stop creating excuses.

        1. and panathinaikos won it and how many of their players are now used in the first team ?
Simic didn’t want to renew by the way so the club didn’t really have much of an option and you are seriously not comparing playing in the belgian league with serie a are you or what ? Oh yeah anderlechts coach was recently also sacked so good for him pfftt.
Results always comes before anything else…even talent development and you know what if they cant even cut it in serie c they will hardly stand the test of playing consistently in serie a.

  4. This is essentially a new team. Cohesion will take time.

Is Bonera the right guy to help create cohesion?

I am not sure. Maybe they should give him two or three more games. If there is no progress, consider someone else.

  5. If Cardinale really means “made in Italy” then He has to let some of these puppies out into the hunt. But I think he is full of it, a banker first and foremost and a salesman secondly.

    1. If you want to avoid embarrassing yourself and coming across as one of those unhinged planks who lost their minds just because an American now owns the club, do your research. The Primavera and Futuro are top heavy with Italians. It’s obvious that the club are aware of the criticism of the make-up of the first team squad, they’re aware there are no Italian players in the national team and are and have taken steps to address that.

  6. I haven’t talked about real life in a while, and I know that winds people up around here when I compare football to real life…

The Futuro is like a company taking its graduates and setting them up in an entirely different company with no supervision or support (in some lower tier market to boot) and just saying:

    “Fill your boots”

    1. Without any supervision….come on you are smart enough to know that each and every players in the Futuro or for that sake primavera are scrutinzed extensively in regard of training efforts. growth, performances on a daily basis so I simply doesn’t get that comment of yours.

      1. Yes but none of these supervisors are apparently good enough for the Milan first team so it’s not like they’re being exposed to the best.

        1. What ? Im sorry to say this Maldinis Heir You do realize that its done between the Futuro and the first team so basically you are just writing up nonsense here.
If the players is deemed ready or that there isn’t any better alternatives than the young players they will play or do you actually value talent development higher than the results of the first team or what ?

          1. Id also like to add that players like Camarda and Zeroli has been training with the first team since last year and you can add a few young goal keepers on top of that as well so I really dont see any points in your musings here.

  7. The team results are hardly indicative of whether two or three players are capable to make the leap into our first team. Not everyone in this team is suited to beat more experienced players in Serie C/Lega Pro, that’s the harsh truth. It’s been a problem in Italy for quite some time, the focus on tactical preparation seems to completely overshadow the physical and mental development that are just as (if not more) important for a young player to shine beyond the primavera championship.

That being said, Liberali and Jimenez seem to have the qualities to be given more chances in the first team. The latter has to do better defensively, though, he cost us the Coppa Italia last season, despite the penalty decision being rather dubious. As for Liberali, RLC is hardly a world beater as AM and I doubt Morata will be used as faux 10 in the long run just because that worked within the specific plan for the derby. Maybe Tijy will develop there, who know, but there’s definitely space for the kid, he looked special during pre-season.
