Comparing the squad wages of the top 8 Serie A sides in 2024-25

Although you don’t need the squad wages to understand that AC Milan should be much higher in the standings, it’s still interesting to compare the top teams in that sense. So, how much do the top 8 sides pay in wages?

It has been a season of disappointment for the Rossoneri thus far, currently sitting in eighth place, and something special is required in the second half of the season. Indeed, taking a look at the squad wages of each team in the top 8 positions, the failure is clear.

Calcio e Finanza compiled the data back in September, following the closure of the summer window, and Milan are in third place overall with wages amounting to €104m gross. Fiorentina, meanwhile, are in seventh place despite currently sitting in fifth in the league standings.

Wages of top 8 clubs in Serie A

  • Inter: €141.7m gross
  • Juventus: €108.4m
  • Milan: €104.3m
  • Roma: €87.9m*
  • Napoli: €82.9m
  • Lazio: €68.2m
  • Fiorentina: €61.6m
  • Atalanta: €59.2m
  • Bologna: €36.1m

*Roma are currently not in the top eight, which is a huge failure.

Atalanta is without a doubt the most impressive, but it should also be noted that their project has always included relatively low wages. They develop players rather than signing ready and experienced ones, which naturally brings down the cost of the wages.

  1. Do these numbers play in Cardinale’s moneyball? If they do, than the 3 clowns in managment should be fired over text massages.

  2. I already wrote this under a similar article once upon a time.
At inter if you exclude Martinez and his 20M gross (net 9+2) salary the numbers aren’t that different from ours. They pay more, yes. But only a million more. They best players will earn 5-6M base and then and then a 500k or a mil in bonus.

      1. Sure they do.
        Like any club.
        And inter doesn’t?
Arnautovic and taremi cost inter 10M in wages. How many goals have they produced this season?
Pavard seems to be injured all the time. Zielinski was brought in on a 4 year contract 5.5M worth. He hasn’t exactly impressed so far.

Idk why people act like Milan is the only club that signs flops. Everyone does. And while I don’t really agree with our signing policy at least our flops don’t cost us much.
        Silver lining and all that

  3. Milan is totally flop. Thats the missing piece in moneyball puzzle. 8TH position and second highest wages…

Lets start from beginning; Emerson Royal, Fode BAllo, Pavlovic, Florenzi, Bennacer, Loftus Cheek, Origi, Chukwueze, Abraham, Morata, Jovic, are overpriced and over paid players. They should have less salary from beginning.

All our other players, and these above, should have 50% less wages in season without champions legue competition.

    1. Moneyball should get underrated players for low cost. This is what we’ve done in many cases. The issue is to keep those players once they increase there reputation you have to pay them more or sell up. This is always going to happen

      1. As I said, you don’t know what moneyball is. Moneyball is using data and analytics instead of traditional scouting methods to identify players. Not a single player signed by Redbird is a moneyball signing, none of the players signed were leaders in any footballing metrics, Moncada is a traditional scout.

Milan’s approach to transfers today is no different to the approach over the last 20 years. The days of signing the best players in the world ended last century. Signing players on low fees with huge potential and selling for huge profits started with guys like Kaka’ and Pato. It’s nothing new.

  4. Salary alone is irrelevant. Morata has big salary because he costed peanuts as a transfer. Same goes for some other players, but more importantly same goes for the many free transfers Marota wins. If not for that Inter would give same salaries as us. So we are paying well and above the IT market. The issue is top 3 teams in italy earn less than bottom 3 in premier league. Considering that, the italian clubs are doing way too well in Europe.
