Sergio Conceicao, Head Coach of Porto

Cardinale and Conceicao can begin path to a better Milan in January

AC Milan are in desperate need of something, and they have a chance to move forward starting with the Supercoppa Italiana in January, here’s why.

The Paulo Fonseca era lasted just less than half a season, and there can be many gripes taken with the season so far. Milan, despite sitting in a healthy position in the Champions League, sit in a difficult position in the league table.

Losses to Napoli and Atalanta have effectively seen any chance of a Scudetto fall out of the window, whilst poor results against several teams lower than them in the table have made hopes of a top-four finish diminish.

However, there is a chance for things to restart. For good this time, rather than for a few games – the Suppercoppa Italiana.

The tournament does not kick off for a few days, so if you would like to pass the time until the Rossoneri’s first game against Juventus then consider heading to Curacao – an e-gaming provider.

Gerry Cardinale is already eyeing up the competition as a chance for a restart, and after the persistent fan protests (which have reportedly begun to annoy him), he will be hoping for a positive showing, or at least a positive under the current circumstances.

It offers the Rossoneri a first chance of silverware in the Cardinale era, something which the American is desperate for, and understandably so given the disappointments of his reign so far.

Then we have the bigger factor – the one regarding Sergio Conceicao. The Portuguese head coach arrived on Monday afternoon after rumours that his compatriot was going to be sacked after the Roma game.

He arrives at a time when the Rossoneri are, quite frankly, a mess. Things haven’t clicked this season, at least not consistently, and several players are not showing the levels required. For example, Theo Hernandez has dropped off, and summer investments like Alvaro Morata have not shown their best selves in the red and black, yet.

With that said, there can be no pressures put on the tournament, after all, there is a new head coach in place and as we have become all too familiar with this season, change takes time. Instead, winning the Supercoppa would be a welcomed start to a better period, but not the be-all and end-all of it. Not by any means.

Milan’s Champions League future will also be decided in January, so it could be a fantastic starter for Conceicao. For the fans, it probably needs to be, and for Cardinale, it definitely needs to be. Everyone knows this, but whether it can be said is debatable.
