GdS: ‘This time nothing works’ – concerns for Amorim as Milan are ‘overwhelmed’ by Chelsea

Ruben Amorim will certainly have some reflecting to do after his AC Milan side were well beaten by Chelsea in their penultimate friendly.

La Gazzetta dello Sport write how Milan were ‘overwhelmed’ by Chelsea in a match marked by numerous experiments, continuing a winless preseason campaign that began in Glasgow against Celtic, then continued in Australia and Indonesia.

The difference between the two teams was evident: the Rossoneri finished without a shot on target and practically suffered the entire match, despite Xavi Alonso having several internationals missing from the World Cup.

The 3-0 final score should give pause for thought, and perhaps, despite being on the right track, the Rossoneri are still lagging behind. Honestly, however, it’s difficult to judge a Milan team that – by choice – fielded two equally matched lineups, with their starters spread out.

Next Saturday against Manchester United is a dress rehearsal for the league opener at Torino’s stadium and experiments will no longer be permitted. After today, whoever’s in is in, and those who are out could be told in the coming days.

A story of decline

Amorim started many of the players he must evaluate, namely those who are playing for a spot, from Estupinan to Chukwueze, from Loftus-Cheek to Leao, including Filippo Terracciano. Nonetheless, the high press was evident.

The Blues had more possession, but were unable to break the deadlock after Torriani made a good save to deny Joao Pedro. Milan competed in the game for 30 minutes and had their own bright moments, without testing Sanchez.

Milan had Estupinan dropping deep, but at times the defence became a five-man line as Chelsea kept both wingers high, Pedro Neto on the right and Palestra on the left.

When building up, however, Milan played with three defenders. Modric dropped deep, while Comotto stepped up to form a very unusual 3-1-4-2 formation. The Rossoneri’s defence held out until injury time, then it all went downhill from there.

  1. Leave, stup*d leprechaun, just go and don’t you dare looking back! Evaluate so much deadwood in a penultimate preseason match?! What is practice there then for, what have you been watching last season?! What an i*iot. Of all the people *ie-hard Milan fans from the boyhood (Amorim, Ricci, Modric, Ardon, Gimenez), ONLY ONE man is really worthy of MILAN, the rest su**s just like the (greasy) imposter of an owner.

    1. Idiots like you must’ve been celebrating when Milan beat Madrid and Liverpool in preseason 2 years ago as if that was a f*cking indicator for anything

      Check your brain asap

  2. Amorim inherited a team that went 24 games unbeaten and has managed to make the team worse!?! Amorim the destroyer!!

  3. ruben trying to mix and match players but didn’t work as I see yesterday.. a good defeat, lesson learned.. and tbh, we need leao..

  4. The Gazzetta headline (“This time nothing worked”) sums up the two halves: a toothless attacking team, not a single accurate shot, and a defense easily breached by long passes. Discipline and high pressing without individual quality become mere haphazard running on the pitch. But the defeat came at just the right time. It exposed Ruben Amorim reality of the current squad، complex tactical ideas cannot be implemented without players possessing high quality in ball distribution. Amorim coolly stated after the match: “We know we will struggle against teams like Chelsea, but we put the players through these challenges to discover who is suitable for the project.”
