CorSera: A firefighter in front of a firing squad – Furlani reassures amid tough questioning

By Oliver Fisher -

After a whole summer in which Zlatan Ibrahimovic took the floor alongside the new signings, CEO Giorgio Furlani faced some tough questions yesterday sitting next to Tammy Abraham.

As Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) writes, Abraham was officially presented in the conference room of Casa Milan and Furlani sat alongside him to take the place of Ibrahimovic, still out of town due to ‘a commitment made some time ago, even before arriving at Milan’.

Given the poor start to the season and the Theo-Leao saga, Furlani faced a firing squad in terms of the questioning but tried to act as a fireman a bit by putting an end to the various controversies, aiming to reassure fans and the media.

It was impossible not to start from a poor start to the season. Milan have only obtained two points in three games and are yet to find a victory, instead conceding six goals (two per game) and demonstrating a defensive phase that was perhaps even more shaky than that seen last season.

“It is obvious that we would have preferred to obtain nine points but this is not the time to talk about important challenges or decisive games. We are all with the coach and we are certainly not in the grip of panic,” Furlani said.

The management have complete confidence in the work of the Portuguese coach, therefore, regardless of the rumours that the Venezia, Liverpool and Inter games could be an early watershed for his future.

The other big theme on which Furlani was – again, inevitably – questioned concerns the incident involving Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao during the cooling break in the 2-2 draw against Lazio, which has dominated the headlines.

In this case too, the Rossoneri director immediately wanted to put an end to the controversy by reiterating the exaggeration of a case that within the club and team they did not think could reach such proportions.

Furlani said: “There has been a lot of talk about it, perhaps too much. We managers and even the players themselves were surprised by the reaction that followed. For us it is a non-event.”

Whether it actually went like this or not, it is clear that on a general level both Theo and Leao will have to get back to their best straight after the break, because they have the strength to be decisive within this team.

  1. Considering that Furlani is a major part of the management, he looks more like a guy who started the fire than a fireman but I guess you can be both so let’s see.
