CorSera: How and why a calf tweak became five months out for Maignan

Mike Maignan has recovered from his calf problem but there is no desire on the part of the medical staff to rush his recovery, a report claims.

The French goalkeeper hasn’t played an official match since mid-September, and this morning’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via Calciomercato.com) reports that neither the player nor the staff will commit to a definite return date for two reasons.

The first is that for five months Maignan has not jumped or leapt, which are of course fundamental elements for goalkeeper training. The second is that nobody can absolutely guarantee that the ‘scar’ left on his calf will not cause further problems when he ups his workload.

Many have asked how a simple calf tweak has become such a long-term issue, but the paper stats that it is not the fault of Milan’s medical staff or even that of the French national team as some speculation.

The truth is that Maignan – in order to speed up his recovery ahead of the World Cup on Qatar – relied on a physiotherapist who is renowned as a ‘muscle wizard’. However, instead of speeding up the solution to the problem, he only hindered his recovery.
