CorSera: Milan take the fight to Barcelona in bid to land Depay – Maldini hopes to convince him

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have once again been linked with a move to sign Memphis Depay from Lyon on a free transfer by the Italian media.

A number of different forwards have been linked over the past few days including the likes of Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina, Gianluca Scamacca of Sassuolo and even Donyell Malen from PSV Eindhoven.

Howver, according to il Corriere della Sera (via MilanLive) the Rossoneri management are ‘continuing to cultivate a different market dream’ and a potential free transfer too in Memphis Depay.

He is a very technical and dynamic player and not really an old-style centre-forward but a converted winger who has shown that his movements have enough to more than trouble teams. Paolo Maldini hopes to convince the Dutchman to join Milan as the player has decided not renew his contract.

There are two obstacles, the first being the high salary requested by Depay, who at Lyon already receives about €4.3m net per season and will certainly expect a higher figure from his next team. Then, there is the competition from elite clubs like Barcelona.

However, Milan could still convince him with a tempting project, especially in case of qualification to the next Champions League. He would be able to rotate with his former team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic to ensure an attack of quality for next season.
