CorSera: Pioli’s trophy target inextricably linked to future at Milan

Stefano Pioli’s desire to win a trophy this season at AC Milan is something linked very clearly with his future at the club, a report suggests.

As has been reported by Corriere della Sera (via Milan News), Pioli very frequently finds himself in the crosshairs and he almost lost his job just weeks ago when results and performances reached a worrying level.

Milan have been on a positive trajectory in recent weeks, though, and tonight they are facing Atalanta in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia. Should they win that game at San Siro, a two-legged tie against Fiorentina awaits them.

There is a very clear and achievable route to the final and Pioli is desperate to get there. With it already looking very unlikely, though not impossible, for Milan to win the Serie A title, this is the best opportunity for a trophy.

They are in the Europa League, but it is hard to think about winning that tournament until the quarter-final stage as it is such a marathon, with multiple two-legged ties against quality opposition.

Winning the Coppa Italia would improve Pioli’s stock with the fans and perhaps allow him more leniency in Serie A and the Europa League when that tournament kicks off again.
