CorSera: Renewal talks begin from Maignan’s €8m demands – the situation

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan want to renew Mike Maignan’s contract and the player wishes to stay, however it will not be a straightforward negotiation as per a report this morning.

Today’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) states that Maignan is one of the undisputed leaders of this Milan team and for this reason one of the priorities among the management at present is his contract renewal.

The Frenchman’s current deal expires in 2026 and he earns €2.8m. Talks with his agents have already begun and they start from a good position, which is the fact that Maignan wishes to remain at the club and in the city where he feels very happy.

However, this alone cannot be enough to reach an agreement because there is the economic aspect, including a more than deserved salary increase which has been requested by the former Lille player.

The first request was €8m net per year, a figure well above the cap envisaged by the ownership, but Milan does not want to lose Maignan and will therefore continue negotiations with his entourage, with the hope of reaching an agreement soon.

If they run into difficulties then there are no shortage of top European clubs watching on and ready to pounce, such as Manchester United and Chelsea in the Premier League and above all Bayern Munich.

  1. Sell.
A GK or a defender should never be the highest paid player on the team.
He is injury prone, and he hasn’t been that good this season either. Ranks 15th in save percentage out of 20 goalkeepers in serie A. Another soft goal allowed vs. Frosinone.

    1. Was Donnarumma not among the highest paid in Milan and was he not a goalie that was very good at conceding goals, let’s be candid, if he collects 8m Euros per season, he’s better than Donnarumma

      1. 8M is too much. Leao was Serie A MVP when we won the Scudetto and he didn’t get something like that. Why would Maignan get that money, with what did he deserve it?

      2. Donnarumma was overpaid and the only reason why he stayed as he and Raiola already blackmailed us in the first place when he signed his first contract with us.
I would like Maignan to stay with us but breaking the wage cap to such an extent doesn’t really serve us well either as other players salary demands will be affected by it.

  2. I like mike and he is a great goalie. Can in on him for 100 or 85 mil (what has been reported). Goalie is easier to replace than other departments. 10 mil for a goalie sounds a bit too much.
