CorSera: Monaco owner Rybolovlev ‘reacted angrily’ and raised Fofana price – the background

By Oliver Fisher -

Talks between AC Milan and Monaco over Youssouf Fofana are at risk of breaking down as the owner of the Ligue 1 side has been left unhappy, according to a report.

Last night, Di Marzio reported that Manchester United and Atletico Madrid have entered the race for Fofana and this has complicated things. The Monegasques are now asking for €35m to sell, which is obviously a huge rise in the demands for a player who has 11 months left on his contract.

This morning’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via Radio Rossonera) have lifted the lid on why the Ligue 1 club changed their demands, and the protagonist of the story is the Russian oligarch Dmitrij Rybolovlev, who has been the owner of Monaco since 2011.

Rybolovlev ‘reacted angrily’ for ‘not having been immediately involved in the negotiations’ with the Rossoneri, refusing Giorgio Furlani’s offer of €14m and raising the asking price quite substantially.

This ‘outburst’ regarding his demands is indeed because of the interest from United and Atletico, and the paper confirm that Rybolovlev is now asking for €35m to sell.

The gap between what Milan are willing to offer and how much the Ligue 1 club want to sell remains very wide therefore, and at the moment it seems most likely that they walk away.

  1. This is really simple indeed. I dont know how Fofana feels about this, but he should just wait for his contract ends on 2025 and go wherever he wants, for more money and ZERO (a big one) money for Monaco. And I am positive than can happen

    1. Does he though? Does he want Milan like Zirkee did? He kept saying he wants Milan than went with his agents demands and signed for Man U in record time.

      1. My post was meant as a sarcasm for the people saying not to worry because “Fofana only wants Milan”.
Well he seems to be getting further away now.

    1. Right? And the temper tantrums! I thought these people were barred from doing business in Europe. How does he still own a football club while Abramovich was forced to sell Chel$ki?

  2. Since it is on a player to pick a club where he wants to play, just sit Fofana down and tell him that those 14M that was meant for his transfer will go it him instead if he waits for contract to expire and joins Milan on free.

Angry Russian gets nothing, player gets more money, Milan gets the player at a fair price.

      1. Who says you cant do it. You can give a player a a bigger paycheck. Split those 14M and add it to his wages. It doesn’t have to be a sign on bonus. There is a million ways to screw a club if player is willing to do it. Milan god screwed multiple times, they are basically experts on that now.

  3. Oops, it’s no point haggling over a few millions when you know the player is worth it. Hojbjerg already signed for Marseille, there goes our two main targets for DM position. Back to the drawing board.

I remember it was same issue when we signed Honda where the club refused to be coarsed into accepting peanuts and allowed the player run down his contract.
Fofana may just sign for another club plus we don’t have the luxury to wait for next season.

  4. If United want him we should be talking with fiorentina to take amraabat with a loan and option and take that option away from United and then decide next year if we keep or take forfana if he’s still at Monaco.

  5. I hate this club technical director so much why do we always need to take 40000 years to get a deal done and why can’t they just offer the right amount of money if we sell bennecar for 50m 35m won’t be a problem, this team is gonna be looking terrible next season

    1. Because you can’t overpay for a player just because the other team decides to ask for insane amounts. Let’s say we pay 35Mil for him and he turns like CDK and than we sell him for 14 Mil that’s a 21 Mil hit to our overall revenue which means lower buying power later. Would you pay an extra 15K for your car because the dealer raises the price last minute, no so same applies here.

      1. Had we paid 18M€ few days ago instead of always trying to get a discount, we might already had the player before Manchester or Atletico got interested.

        1. I think Nobody is interested. Just trying to hike up a price with fake interested. 14mil = bonuses now, or nothing in the winter.

          1. Interested or not, they hook up the price, so we went from a gap of 3M€ to now 20M€. It might be just stupid stuborness, but it’s their decision to make and we could have avoided that few days ago. And we need a defensive midfielder right now, we can’t afford to wait till winter because he might be free.

    1. The technical director should not be involved with transfers and buying players! He is dragging this Club down and yes no other club will deal with Milan in the future!

Cardinale should step in now and change things immediately or the season will be lost to Inter or Juve again.
Fofana is the key they should have signed long ago instead of allowing other clubs a foot in the door.
      Furlani should go Now!
How do we get other club owners offside always?

  6. They are fast becoming the club everybody wants to compete with for players and fast becoming the marketing agent for teams who want to sell at higher prices. We are loved by everyone but ourselves…

  7. N🧊. If this is true I’m glad. Milan is making fools of themselves with such 💩 negotiations and lowballing like a bunch of 🤡.

Now, before anyone starts whining, I’m not saying we should’ve paid or offered 35M for him. But a proper price (20 ane bonuses) and this deal would’ve been done weeks ago..

  8. I dont understand why most it your reason here…. truth most be told Milan should have sealed this deal since but they always want discount now the price is half doubled.. as far is things stand Fofana is Monaco player and they can choose to sell him any price they wish.

On like Milan management who let their player go for cheap price. If sonic happens to be EPL player he would have been sold for another less that 10million but Milan let him go for 3million with clauses

  9. I remember fans and some still do to this day, that praised the sale of tonali lmfao. They spent 120 mil or so and didn’t get a top dm… now they struggle to get players like fofana that isn’t even close to Tonalis abilities. This is why you don’t sell tonali bc replacing him is almost impossible. Bravo Gerry and furlani, bravo 🤦🏾‍♂️

  10. Also we could have gotten Højbjerg for a loan with option to buy for even less than 18M€.
    Just sayin you know…

  11. 35m for a player that can be negotiated with for free in 5 months time? Yeah this owner is a moron, if I’m United or Atletico and they put that price on him if things break down between us and Monaco I’d just wait it out, wait till December and sign him for free.

  12. Wait till he has 6 months left on his contract and sign him for free. Nobody is paying 35m for a player with 11 months left on his contract, negotiate when 6 months hit and dodge the transfer fee entirely.

  13. Man utd and Atletico will not pay that much. This man wants more for a player in his final season. It’s risky. If Fofana decides he wants only Milan, they might lose him for nothing, or have to negotiate with Milan. They would only push Milan to pay more, but, certainly not €35m.

  14. I honestly like the hardball approach from management. Milan are no stranger to players leaving on a free and given how clubs negotiate with Milan I’d now offer 10M and increase Fofana’s salary by 2M and the agent commission by 2M. League 1 is so F’d

  15. Plan B just get amrabat now and get fofana in january if he is still in monaco . This is what you get if you keep lowballing other club for massive discount. From beginning monaco asking price 20m euro but you keep lowballing them with 12m euro offer ( market value 30m euro ) . Try to loan with option to buy for ugarte to PSG also good option

  16. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO

I hate to say “I told you so” – BUT – I told you so

To all the Redbird sicofants – hahahahahahahaha.

This is why you don’t always haggle haggle haggle. This is why IF you are a big club and want to WIN you don’t eff around and nickel and dime a club when yo have the opportunity to get such a good player for cheap in Fofana. We should have offered 20M and closed this a month ago.

But of course we try and penny pinch every dollar and haggle haggle haggle LOL. EMBARASSING!

It’s funny and somewhat ironic – because we have no issue dumping young talent like Simic for peanuts – a paltry 3M – BUT won’t spend that extra 3-5M to get the Fofana deal done?????

I don’t blame the owner of Monaco – he’s a billionaire. I’d rather keep Fofana for the year to help Monaco qualify for UCL (which is worth 40-50M) versus selling him for an insulting 12M LOLOLOLO.

Let’s face it – we have a bunch of AMATEURS running our sporting club. Furlani is a banker; Moncada a scout; Ibra just a figure head and Gerry’s puppet. Juve have Giuntoli (who is on fire) and Inter have Marotta. We have Furlani lol.

We have a TRANSFER CAP – of 20M max per player
We have a WAGE CAP – of 5M per player
Good luck trying to CONSISTENTLY win TITLES with this model lol.

It’s time to just be honest: Redbird are in this for PROFIT. That is all. If we happen to win a few things here and there along the way, ok. If not it’s all good so long as we qualify for UCL each year to keep that PROFIT margin solid – that is all we can expect. It makes me laugh when I hear the Redbird lovers jump for joy when they discover we are profitable and they somehow think that will make us a spending club and we will spend 50-60M on a big player LOL. So delusional. No matter how much PROFIT we make – it won’t affect our ability to spend more in the transfer market. Get that through your thick skulls Redbird lovers lol.

    Good times

    1. I look at all the so called clubs outspending us nd i found out they are not wining as such as some dumb fans make it look, Chelsea fail, Man U failed, Liverpool failed, Baryern Failed Arsenal Failed, Inter as spent less than Milan on Transfers mostly taking free players yet they won, Leverkusen did the same Dortmund almost did it two seasons ago until the last day, dude you are such a comedian, the last I recall it was Elliot than brought GAZIDIS on board nd the so called revenue collector is Casper Stylsvig, both where hired by Elliot, there where the ones that introduced salary caps nd insisted Milan won’t buy players for ridiculous fees, and that trend as been followed since, it was GAZIDIS that hired Fularni and Moncanda, both of whom most of you ignorant hate, this same operation system as been followed till now, the only person that want MILAN To spend crazy money was Leonardo, nd that was the same trend Maldini want to follow because that was his teacher and I hope Y’all ve seen how a failure is Leonardo as a director he continued his mess at PSG,l nd got sacked, Nedved had a vice president role at Juventus, Zanetti as a similar role at Inter, they where not deciding or forcing there opinions on Co Profesionals, bt immediately they told our dearest legend Maldini to move to a ceremonial role like those legends he turned it down, he started acting as if he is a professional in that role, the same role when they gave him, he confessed he knows nothing about and he will humbly learn from Leonardo before he can gradually improve, a role had to be coined twice because of him, that role that never existed in football just because they want to put him @Maldini on board, this are the same Americans you fans are now hating on, if there was anybody that should have hired Maldini for any job it should have been Berlusconi and Galliani, after Maldini retired in 2009, Until this same Americans Elliot/Redbird hired him. for 9 years Galliani nd Berlusconi never considered Maldini for any role at the club because they know him better than anyone, however if Maldini want to show Elliot and Redbird how to run a club, he should use his stake at Miami FC, Maldini was never a trained scout, was never a trained director, he did not train for any executive role however the so called Americans gave him a job. He Maldini took credit for bringing in Theo, however it was Moncada that had a scouting profile on Theo since he was at Atletico, all Maldini had to do was talk to convince Theo and every other targets, from Leao, Tomori, Maignan, Benaccer, Pulisic nd more have always been on Moncanda scouting network for years, all they had to do was to show Maldini because of yhe respect thay had for him, nd they want him to make decisions after all he was an ex football player, the only 2players Maldini claimed to have watched them playing was Messias when he went to watch Christian Maldindi at the lower leagues nd Castillejo when he was on vacation playing tennis in spain, nd Ballo toure was an Idea of Massara, Maldini was nd will always remain a legend and we will remain forever grateful but we need to respect those people that where around him, they are professionals in there fields and Moncanda is one of top 5 best scouts in Europe, nd if you like yall can continue your hate for Furlani, the same way yall hated GAZIDIS when he came in nd was putting all the accounts in order, the best of is students is Furlani who as proved to learn well, stupid set of fans have stated the same hatred towards Zlatan. The guy is working and he as actually help set up the entire Milan futuro, fixing and bringing professionals to take roles to make progress, the same way fools are hating on Cardinale, the man as just spent over €27m to put Milan futuro in place, the stadiums they will play is being fixed they are signing players nd they had to register them as the italian FA rules permit, aside Juventus no club in seria A owns a stadium the man is about to invest €1.2b to build on of the best stadiums in the world so Milan can have there own sustainable income at large, yet fools can’t see, unbelievable hatred as blind there eyes, we can’t wait to see your people gone to support another team so we can have peace.

  17. LOL

Nobody said to recklessly spend you illiterate donkey. But should we be able to spend 20M on a young strong player like Fofana who fills a desperate need – YES. Yet it’s the Same old story. More excuses after excuses.

“ Liverpool failed, Baryern Failed Arsenal Failed, Inter as spent less than Milan on Transfers mostly taking free players yet they won, Leverkusen did the same Dortmund almost did it two seasons ago until the last day, ”. Hahahahahahhahaha! Ya they all suck LOL. Look at the player salaries of Inter you fool. They PAY their players more that’s how they get them to come on free transfers. I would be thrilled if we signed free agents like Inter – but when we have the opportunity (you know like we did w/a player like Thuram??) we lost him over 500k and he burned us. Big clubs with our history don’t operate like that.

I have never advocated to spend 200M like Li did. However, a serious club does not penny pinch over every nickel – they go buy the players (within reason) to try to win titles. If Redbird is unwilling to spend 20M on a player we have no business owning a club. When a player like Fofana is avail for a fair price and agrees to a fair salary and wants to come – what is the fkn problem??? Juve purchased Thuram for 20M who was in the last year in his deal AND didn’t even make the national team.

Hate Gazidis? Nobody ever said anything about Gazidis you clown.

“ all Maldini had to do was talk to convince Theo and every other targets, from Leao, Tomori, Maignan, Benaccer, Pulisic nd more have always been on Moncanda scouting network for years, all they had to do was to show Maldini because of yhe respect thay had for him…”

LOLOLOLO. Nobody brought up Maldini. But since you did and Even tho you cannot spell you really contradicted yourself. Read what you just said you donkey. Ya he has ZERO influence on any of those players signing despite the players themselves saying they came because he convinced them to come LOL. Ya ya ya, we know Maldini is only responsible for the poor signings – and Moncada the good ones. LOL. Keep dreaming kid.

The difference between you and me is that I love the CLUB and the colors – NOT ownership. Owners come and go. Fans are forever. You have a hard on for these owners which is comical. We will have good owners amd bad. All I care about is an owner that wants to win. If they don’t move on and bring in another owner that will. That is sports. You are delusional to believe that the more PROFIT Redbird makes that they will spend more $$ into the club. Ha! Wake up son. You sure your not @Boulden?
