CorSera: Theo wants more than Leao to renew – negotiations to resume soon

By Oliver Fisher -

Theo Hernandez has not had an ideal start to the season when factoring in his performance against Parma and the cooling break saga during the Lazio game, but his renewal remains an issue the management must tackle.

As Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) write, Theo must be given some slack for being one of the last to return after a very long season that ended with him starting all the games at the European Championships up until France’s defeat in the semi-finals.

Yet, despite not being in the best of form, the Frenchman has not appeared the same from other points of view and (a bit like the whole team) has played below his expectations. In three games he has started from the bench twice, and in the game he started he didn’t put the required shift in.

The break should be welcome in terms of getting him back to 100%, but naturally he has already jetted off to be with Didier Deschamps’ France squad as they have two UEFA Nations League games to come. He could, therefore, return tired again.

The management hope the cooling break saga will not complicate the negotiations for the renewal that will simply have to resume soon between the club and his entourage after being left on standby during the summer mercato.

Nonetheless, it is an extension that promises to be complicated, since the initial request of Theo and those who represent him is €8m net per season, above what Rafael Leao – the highest earner in the squad – currently gets. Milan will have to work patiently and effectively to keep him.

        1. AC should sell all money hungry players …. no point crying over these players as they have no heart for the club. Instead prop the team with Italian players who want to wear the red & black jersey. Wake up to this continuous saga of of money first and service after, where often they don’t deliver their worth.

  1. Théo has suddenly became a bad player? Fonseca doesn’t know how to use the two best players of the team? Théo is unhappy at the club?

He went to Australia but he didn’t have to, missing the start of France’s gathering for the Euro, and he seemed happy at that time. Despite Deschamps being annoyed and saying that he would bench Théo and Giroud for the first games of the Euro, Théo played instantly even in the preparation games and had a great Euro. Meanwhile there’s the statement from Zlatan that “Théo is happy”, which started the media war with Théo replying that maybe he could leave Milan. It escalated quickly, to quote Ron Burgundy, to the current situation. If my kitchen is on fire, I won’t call Furlani the fireman because I don’t want the whole house to burn down in flames.

    1. Of course he isn’t a bad player but he hasn’t played up to his best at least for now in this season. If he gets up in gear and shows leadership then I personally has no issues in giving him an improved contract and even a better one than Leao even if preferably the same as the Portuguese player.
In regard of the Australia friendly match the players actually had to be there because it was only the day after that Roma match that the international coaches could demand availability. I do get Deschamps irritation about that scheduled match as it basically only had a marketing purpose and potentially could have cost some players participation at the Euros.

      1. He’s not paid to be a leader. Most football players are in this case. Most human beings even. We lost many leaders along the years. In return we have Zlatan, who was a leader as a player and was heavily influential for the Scudetto, but now everyone can see he’s just a showman. Théo has been a true professional, a warrior, showing grinta and dedication to this club. Now he’s a pariah.

Théo is judged by some Internet court where everyone has an opinion but we don’t have any fact or evidence. His behavior doesn’t make him look good, that’s true. But what are the roots of that circus? There is toxicity at the club and it’s not from today. And it’s not helping that the management is acting like everything’s good since the beginning. Théo is happy? Théo might leave now but it won’t probably stop as long as there is no answer about what is going wrong with the club.

        1. If you are amongst the best paid players its fair to expect them to lead and up until this season i do think he has been that to some extent, As time progresses and older players leaves its natural to expect a player like him growing into that role more and more,

Still any amateure football player would know it was not ok to do that so if they cant see that themselves then its really them being beyond naive.

    2. Theo is a champion. He already extended twice cause they lied to him that this team has an ambition, we all know he could have been earning a lot more in some other club by now. But no, he chose to stay here mainly tnx to Maldini and the ambitious plans he had that lead to the scudetto. What happened since then ? Some of the best players we had are gone, mediocore players were brought instead and our goal is only getting in the CL group stage, nothing else. Why would one of the best, if not the best LB in the world waste his career in such place. He can be winning titles in City or Bayern right now, so of course he is unhappy here now.

      1. That’s it in a nutshell.
Some people here think Leao and Theo will stay regardless of what a mess the management have made.
Time is of the essence. Unfortunately I think the time is up, Theo and Leao have stayed in the belief we were building a world class team, I just don’t believe it anymore and I’m sure they don’t either

  2. Milan is being managed by stup!d inexperienced people. They don’t know when to sell players and they don’t know when to sign these players replacements.

We still don’t even have a decent backup for Theo. So he has no competition in the team. That’s why he’s asking for a ridiculous salary to renew.

It doesn’t get any dumber than Milan. This management is clueless about running a football club and building a competitive team.

Every decision they make is reactionary. Zero proactive thinking and no foresight whatsoever.

  3. Great player if he wants to be. 8M net a season player? Not in Italy. Maybe in 10 years if we get our own stadium.
Typical Milan curse is a player gets a hefty renewal then their performance drops.. go figure

  4. He’ll go and I don’t blame him. He is the best left back in the world. He deserves better team mates, a shot at the UCL, and fans that don’t side with a 2 month old clueless manager over a very (very) minor indiscretion.

    1. “fans that don’t side with a 2 month old clueless manager over a very (very) minor indiscretion.”

The same fans who wanted #pioliout before Pioli was even appointed. The same Pioli who brought us the scudetto.

LOL. Do you even realize how absurd your comment is?

  5. Give him 8-9M and get it over with.
He and Leao are tired from not being fit enough after a longer vacation from Euros.

Give Mika an extension too. Costs more to buy a new goalie of that class. Hopefully he doesn’t get injured as much.

  6. Quite frankly, on his last two years Theo has every right to ask for more than Leao – he’s been the team’s best player by far. Especially as his agent is probably early in negotiation and considering the amounts other clubs will have waved under his nose, there can’t be any surprises there.
