Rafael Leao has struggled to make an impact for Portugal so far and it’s something that worries AC Milan, knowing that a sale might be on the cards this summer.
Portugal kick-started their World Cup adventure with the game against DR Congo on Wednesday. However, instead of clinching win as expected, they were held to a 1-1 draw after conceding a late equaliser in the first half.

Leao came off the bench in the 72nd minute but as we recapped yesterday morning, it wasn’t exactly a performance that helped Portugal create loads. Indeed, he struggled in his 1v1s and thus failed to inspire Portugal to a crucial winner.
Concern ahead of the mercato
As reported by Corriere dello Sport this morning (via MilanNews), Leao’s future is a hot topic at Casa Milan right now. In about a week, the new head coach Ruben Amorim will hold talks with the No.10 to understand if he can still fit into the project.
However, Leao’s body language and comments suggest that he has already decided to leave the club this summer. Of course, any potential departure will require offers to arrive, and that is something that worries Milan at the moment.
The Rossoneri know that they could register sizeable capital gain from Leao, which could then be reinvested on the mercato. But again, that will require offers of €50m+ to actually arrive and considering the forward’s current form, that is far from a given.

correct me guys if i’m wrong. Amorim plays a 3-4-3 doesnt he? Wouldnt that require actual wingers? i.e. the position where Leao actually plays well.
No he plays 3-4-2-1 with two second strikers or attacking midfielders (playmaker style of players) behind the center forward.
Leao would have to play as an attacking midfielder central in the pitch, and work hard defensively to cut of any vertical passing through the middle.
It would suit him better then as a forward in a 3-5-2, but not utilize his biggest strenght, the 1 vs 1. Dribbling from the flank is very different from dribbling in the middle of the pitch.
The problem is he is too lazy and not a team player. He has all the talent in the world but until he decides to give it everything he has he will stay just above average. Trust me I want to see a world class Leao but I dont think he has the drive to be the best.
That’s a pretty spot on assessment in my view K. It’s a real shame though as he leaves so much more to be desired and it’s a huge disappointment that he never took that step up as it could have been so beneficial for us to have an actual world class player in him but at this point I don’t see it happening either.
Why would any club wants Leao unless they like throwing money away. If he hasn’t got the the ability to dribble past players whilst playing for Milan howcome he can dribble past players with another team. Forget it. He is someone from the past that doesn’t fit the present or future !!!!!
And it seems the WC will only drag his price further down.
