CorSport: Commission and Fonseca – why Milan’s pursuit of Zirkzee is on hold

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan have been admirers of Joshua Zirkzee for several months, but when negotiations are near an ending point, the deal has slowed down. The main reason has been due to commission, but a report has suggested that Paulo Fonseca is the other reason.

In the transfer window, there are very few guarantees, but one that can be provided in Milan’s case is that a new striker will be purchased, and in recent months, that striker has seemed to be Zirkzee. As we reported at the end of 2023, the Rossoneri have held interest in the Dutchman for a while and saw him as a top candidate to be their replacement for Olivier Giroud.

However, the deal has slowed recently, and there has been one main reason cited – Kia Joorabchian’s commission demands. While this is cited as a reason by Corriere dello Sport (via Milan News), there is another bump in the deal.

As they report, Milan primarily do not want to pay a €15 million commission on top of the release clause, and given his agent will not discount this figure, the deal is viewed sourly. Additionally, though, Paulo Fonseca sees a different profile leading his Diavolo side.

Rather than someone like Zirkzee, he would prefer a profile closer to Olivier Giroud – a ‘penalty area’ forward, rather than a self-defined ‘9.5’ like Zirkzee.

  1. 😂 hang on….I thought the reason we hired Fonseca and not a proper coach was because Milan want a coach not a manager and coaches don’t pick players, they coach the ones they are given

    1. Looks like the new excuse to justify that we’ll miss Zirkee. I don’t care honestly, he looks talented but he’s not a top scorer, but now I’m afraid that we’ll end up with Jovic or some cheap guy.

There is a pattern. The coach is not only a yes man, he’s a shield for the management. It was said last summer that Pioli asked for the recruited players. Yeah I’m sure that he asked for Musah, the right winger turned midfielder, or Chukwueze or Jovic. Sportiello, Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek and Okafor seemed like identified players before the sack of the previous management but all the others are young players with potential to raise their value and be sold later, the infamous moneyball strategy.

Cardinale doesn’t know anything about football but he obviously thinks that we should play like PL teams. He reportedly wanted a more physical team after we got destroyed by Chelsea in UCL groups last year. In order to keep his job, it’s highly possible that Pioli promised to change his tactics for the 4-3-3. But he didn’t play much the young guys, so their value didn’t raise and Fonseca is here for that reason. It’s exactly what he was doing at Lille. So we’ll continue to stockpile young cheap players and play them so they develop and raise their value on the market.

  2. If Fonseca “doesn’t want “ Zirkzee, I can sleep calmly…..
Mr Gerry, losing Zirkzee would be funny…especially dropping the fault on to Fonseca…..
By the way, even Fonseca doesn’t know what players the team needs…..
Just another “Pioli” who eats whatever dish is served……..
    Disaster

  3. Knowing our luck he gonna end up at Juve or something and be instrumental in winning the league just to give us another smack in the face, another hindsight situation to look forward to

  4. These stories will go on and on until something officially happens. I just hope Milan don’t take too long in making a decision. Yes? OK. No? Go fvck yourself and the 15mil Donkey you rode in on.
