CorSport: ‘Fofana to free Reijnders’ – Milan take note of impressive Netherlands displays

By Oliver Fisher -

As Tijjani Reijnders continues to shine with the Netherlands at the European Championship, the AC Milan management are planning a move they believe will help him at club level.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan), Paulo Fonseca and the Milan directors have taken note of how well Reijnders plays under Ronald Koeman’s system, one where he is from defensive duties because he is next to a more defensive-minded player in Jerdy Schouten.

The former AZ Alkmaar man plays a little more freely with the Oranje; he moves where he prefers in search of the ball, he finds the best spaces both centrally and wider, he has the possibility of raising his head to feed his team-mates and creating dangerous chances.

This is what Fonseca wants to see him do for Milan both in the 4-3-3 and the 4-2-3-1 and in this summer transfer window the plan is to sign a midfielder with characteristics more suited to a deeper-lying player. The headline reads: ‘Fofana to free Reijnders’.

The main target is Youssouf Fofana of Monaco, who they want €25m for but – given that his contract is expiring on 30 June 2025 – the Rossoneri would like to close at €20m, bonuses included. Once his European Championship campaign with France is over, the negotiations for Fofana will accelerate.

  1. Reijnders does a lot good things on the pitch but there are some things that he needs to clean up and improve.
His shooting and finishing are on Leao’s levels.
Often he doesn’t see or doesn’t pull the trigger on a pass that should be made.
And couple times a game he is too reckless with the most simple passes that puts the team in trouble. Example vs Romania, something that should have been a simple pass to De Vrij in their own half, he misplaced, and it led to De Vrij be forced to foul the Romania player to stop a counter and almost injured himself and the opposing player.
He has been very good at this Euro, offensively and defensively, but he needs to improve and be focused throughout the whole game.
433 is a system where he fits much better than 4231.

    1. Don’t talk bs. Leao’s finishing is excellent. Statistically one of the best in Serie A. He marginally outperforms his XG.

  2. Well yes Reijnders is good but these news are just wild. Netherlands played literally one good match at this Euro (against Romania, where their whole squad is worth less than one Dutch striker xD) and suddenly we have article claiming how good Reijnders looks like from tactical point of view xD

    1. the artivcle is not about how Netherlands are doing.
      it’s about Reijnders.
he’s been a bright spoteven in the games even when his NT was struggling.

  3. He certainly can improve, and I guess Z pointed out with great accuracy exactly the aspects of the game he needs to improve on.

However, one thing must be said, an aspect that I never tire of emphasizing: fortunately Reijnders is an INTELLIGENT player, just like Pulisic, for instance.

This is an incredibly important asset in any sport, and something increasingly rare (and therefore precious) to see on the football world.

  4. So what we’re talking about here, and what the article is highlighting, is not the specifics of Rijnders strengths and weaknesses, but how those will be best harnessed or mitigated, respectively. Read in between the lines and what you will find is clear: Pioli did not know how to get the best out of him. Good luck getting your payday in Arabia Pioli, because no serious team in Europe wanted you for a reason.

  5. For how many months that we’ve been linked with Fofana? Don’t be surprised if other club signs him swiftly within days / weeks.
