CorSport: Fonseca ‘cornered’ after another dire display – derby decisive for his future

The 3-1 defeat against Liverpool at San Siro in the Champions League has opened a fresh inquest into AC Milan and Paulo Fonseca, with a report claiming the derby will be huge in determining his fate.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) write this morning, yesterday’s match against Liverpool has brought Milan crashing down after the flickers of enthusiasm that had been created around the team after the hammering of Venezia on Saturday night.

Fonseca’s team went ahead after three minutes and then fell into the usual mistake of leaving huge gaps between the departments that allowed an opponent with quality like Liverpool to have plenty of freedom to play in transition.

Regarding the goals conceded, the paper adds, the faults of the Rossoneri defenders were once again evident. Conceding two identical goals from set pieces is unforgivable, yet even in open play the Reds were given a lot of time and space to play, hitting the woodwork twice.

The truth is is that the easy victory over Venezia could not be taken as a sign of turning a corner and that yesterday’s Milan showed that they continue to lack balance.

There are two possibilities: either Fonseca has not yet realised the problems, in which case it would be very worrying, or he has not yet been able to find a solution.

Meanwhile, time passes, and with it the patience of the fans evaporates towards a team that – in their eyes – are not matching their passion. On Sunday there is the derby against Inter, a match that will most likely be decisive for the future of Fonseca.

  1. It is not fair to blame Fonseca only. The decision to hire him was simply idiotic.

The management should take the blame for this disgrace, they have destroyed a Scudetto team with bad decision after the other as if they are Interesta in disguise.

Maldini is definitely missed, at least he used to be close and respected by the players, no wonder Pioli was able to turn things around and move in the right direction after many set back with such a dedicated manager next to him

  2. we just gotta ride it out. Firing now will bring nothing. After Inter there will be “easier” games and the team should start gelling more..

    1. I feel like it will like Pioli last season. After many losses, firing is on the door, then start winning against sitting ducks and gain trust again until the next big tests where we fold. Rince and repeat.

  3. The summer was disappointing for the reason we had opportunities and watched pass them by and this shambles of a start is what we feared. Juve will be back in power, inter will be 2 ahead of us and hand us 2 more losses this year. We’ll be back to scrapping for 4th with Atalanta, Roma and Lazio. I cannot fathom for the life of me what goes on at question time in the board room. At one point I asked myself does ibra know something incredible about van bommel that I don’t see, now I realise he just hasn’t got a clue about this role. The job is far to big for him. Calling ex milanista pussycats, that’s some Donald trump level stuff.

  4. Has anyone noticed that Milan is not Italian. Italian clubs like Juve or Inter would have defended the first goal. We trying to bring a new style of play to Italy.

    1. Yep. I cannot understand why Pioli & Fonseca both insist on zonal marking in set-pieces when we continuously concede from them. Against Liverpool our defending was inviting Pool players to come in and score. Absolutely amateurish defending.

  5. It will all depend on the available candidates.
So if Milan and Cardinale can convince Pochettino to dump the US team offer then heck yeah.
But if the alternative is another mid table manager from Ligue 1 then yes don’t replace one clown by another one. It is a full circus already at Milan and no more clowns are needed

  6. Ibra, Furlani and Moncada should be fired along with Fonseca. I would even dare to say that Cardinale should also fire himself.

Milan need an EXPERIENCED CEO and SPORTING DIRECTOR until then they will continue to choose the wrong players and coach.

we shouldn’t renew Maignan and Theo. We should sell them and reinvest the money into strengthening the team. They are not worth keeping.

  7. I’m not looking for excuses, but in the scudetto season we played against Liverpool at the San Siro. In the middle, Tonali and Kesi in the attack of Ibra. Liverpool came with reservations. And? We were smashed by Liverpool with reserves. Much like last night.

  8. Mediocre transfer campaign = mediocre results
    Mediocre coach = mediocre results
Mediocre ambition by ownership = mediocre results

I mean it’s not as if this wasn’t expected. You get what you pay for.

Huge mistakes in the by this management and ownership in the transfer market (Kalulu, no backup LB, no DM; no Benny replacement; resigning Jovic; not signing a backup keeper after Sportiello went down, passing on Motta, Zirkzee, Konè etc….; hiring a “boss” that is more interested in doing TV appearances than helping the squad; having a banker as your sporting director with no experience, etc….the list goes on and on. Now apparently no stadium? Going back to sharing w Inter?? LOL – shocking🤡🤡🤡

I keep on hearing from the Redbird Lovers – “but we have talent” – Yes we have talent – but when there is no PROJECT the players can see and buy in to – you can have all the talent in the world and it means absolutely nothing. Also getting players just because they are cheap or for a bargain deal – and not because they fit the system – doesn’t build a winning TEAM.

Start by firing Fonseca and get a decent coach: Xavi, Conceceaio – but I’m sure we will end up w Allegri lol.

    We are a joke.

    TY Redbird.

    Good times.
