CorSport: Strong but counterproductive choices – Fonseca under scrutiny after Lazio

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are still searching for their first win of the season after they drew 2-2 with Lazio last night, but again they had to come from behind to get anything.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports, the game has brought with it a trail of criticism and controversy, in particular on how Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao voluntarily decided to distance themselves from the rest of the team and the coach during the cooling break, which caused a stir.

However, that only came after Fonseca’s bold choice to leave two of the best players out of the starting line-up. The Frenchman and the Portuguese, with the help of Tammy Abraham, had to come off the bench anyway to rescue a draw, so no benefit came from the end result.

In terms of what it does to the environment, the choice had negative and counterproductive effects, perhaps seen in the choice of the two players not to participate in the team chat at the cooling break. Speaking of cooling break, the internationals coming up next weeks should provide a welcome pause.

Speaking after the game, both Theo and Fonseca poured water on the fire. The Frenchman downplayed the issue, saying that neither he nor Leao needed the cooling break, having just come on.

Fonseca meanwhile put their exclusion down to condition and the type of match: “Maybe people see this as a punishment but it will never be like that. It’s a choice for what we need. Theo is not physically well, I spoke to them and they understood.”

    1. Same problem since Jerry is here. An idiot with huge ego and a disruptive vision that is not adapted to European football. He watched and learned for one year, figuring that he understood everything. Then Moneyball and business oriented policy. Yeah it’s working great. He recently started an interview saying « I’m not a genius » and he should have stopped here.

  1. Player attitude doesn’t matter when Fonseca’s tactics simply do not work. Every goal conceded was scored the same way but he keeps deploying the same strategy.

Looking at every club he has managed, they always leak goals. I woouldn’t mind this if the attack was buttery smooth, as it was promised, but right now Milan is terrible at both ends of the pitch…

Find a proper coach. Someone with new ideas who can revitalize the team like it was needed after Pioli.

  2. I think 🤔 Red Bird should sell
Milan and ‘new owners’ will definitely sack current management and replace them with Maldini again and hire title winning 🏆 coach ❣️Forza Milan‼️⚽️⚽️⚽️🏆🏆🏆

  3. You could start by firing any or all of Giorgio Furlani, Geoffrey Moncada and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for slowly destroying a Scudetto winning team. So far they have accomplished nothing and sadly, we have come to the situation we now have; an inept coach, bad signings and lazy entitled players looking to further undo the team from within.
But anyway, the blance sheet looks good, so it’s not all bad news…
