CorSport: Fullkrug, Mateta and a few others – Milan plot No.9 signing in January

Jean-Philippe Mateta and Niclas Fullkrug are two of AC Milan’s targets for the centre-forward position, currently evaluating a January signing.

Given the lack of goals from their strikers, namely Santiago Gimenez and Christopher Nkunku, Milan are looking to reinforce the squad in January. The duo only have one goal each, both scoring in the Coppa Italia, which certainly isn’t good enough.

As reported by today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (see photo below), Crystal Palace’s Mateta and West Ham’s Fullkrug are two of the players that Milan have identified. Furthermore, they are also keeping an eye on Parma’s Mateo Pellegrino, as well as a few Premier League outcasts.

However, after spending about €158m in the summer to reinforce the squad, Milan don’t exactly have a massive budget for the upcoming window. Sales cannot be ruled out, as such, even if the most likely candidate Santiago Gimenez is very keen on staying.

In our latest bonus article on Substack, we took a closer look at how Milan’s budget can be boosted, relying on some of the current loanees. There is some risk involved, but the Rossoneri might have some more wiggle room than they first thought. We highly recommend giving the article a read.

  1. Somone will need to be sold. Probably Gimenez. Mateta will be costly. If not Mateta, Lewandowski would be a good alternative, a short term one though.

  2. Mateta or Franculino would be a big deal and actually improve the team. So of course it’ll be Fullkrug or Pellegrino.

    1. As a Dane I’ve watched a lot of matches with Franculino and I do actually like him but I don’t think that FC Midtjylland will accept anything less than 35 mil for him as they have already rejected offers of around 25 mil from the EPL.

  3. Fullkrug would work as a short term stopgap. He’s an actual #9 proven in europe, and he desperately wants out of west ham. He could probably even be just loaned in since he’s desperate to leave west ham and get real gametime before the world cup. He’d make a good stopgap so we can evaluate and actually make a good signing in the summer

    1. Fullkrug seems like the most likely arrival. A loan with possibilty to buy (not obligation) is probably doable at a pretty cheap cost. Then they splash to money they have on a center back.
