CorSport: Inter’s stadium plans may change as Oaktree worries increase

Inter might be forced to rethink their plans when it comes to building their own stadium, a report claims, because some further worrying news about their financial situation has emerged.

Milan and Inter have been inextricably linked when it comes to the stadium project(s). Firstly there was the idea launched five years ago whereby the two clubs would build a new home next to the current San Siro which would then be part-demolished.

Then, once that hit a few roadblocks, the teams seemed to go their separate ways with the Rossoneri turning towards San Donato and the Nerazzurri towards Rozzano. Then, the idea of aiming for San Donato together emerged.

While Inter have always publicly made it clear they want to build alone in Rozzano, Alessandro Giudice explained their worrying financial situation during an article for Corriere dello Sport (via Radio Rossonera) today.

The hypothesis that the Zhang family will be able to keep Inter is ‘very remote’ because Suning are ‘a very disastrous group, now linked to rather unsuccessful economic activities in China’ and must repay a €400m loan to the Oaktree fund.

Even if Oaktree agreed to extend the loan, the debt would end up rising due to the increase in the interest rate, and at the moment they have doubts about pushing the deadline back.

The date circled in red is May 20th, which is when it must be repaid. This is only two months away but an agreement could be found in a short time. The fact remains, however, that the arguments presented by Suning do not seem sufficient to date.

Oaktree, which had no plans to take control of Inter, redeemed the package of shares pledged by Suning and Zhang when it obtained the € 275m loan in May 2021. According to Giudice, the US fund have been concretely gearing up for the idea of taking control.

This would of course then have a knock-on impact on Inter’s ability to fund a new stadium and might undermine some of the work they have already done.
