CorSport: Milan head to Dortmund with three absences in midfield – Pioli’s plan

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will face Borussia Dortmund tomorrow night at the Signal Iduna Park in their second Champions League group stage game, and they will do so a bit short on midfield options.

Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) writes this morning that Stefano Pioli’s squad will leave for Germany this afternoon without three midfielders: Ismaël Bennacer, Rade Krunić and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

There will therefore be a new-look midfield in action against the Bundesliga runners-up from last season involving Tijjani Reijnders, Yunus Musah and Tommaso Pobega. Yacine Adli – who had good performances against Cagliari and Lazio – will initially start on the bench.

The paper presumes that Musah will play on the right of the trio in the 4-3-3 in place of Loftus-Cheek, with Reijnders as the man in front of the defence and Pobega on the left.

In the second half, Adli could make his debut in the Champions League depending on the situation in the game and the energy levels of the starting three.

    1. Personally i have no issues with either of adli or pobega startting as things stands but people really under values pobega far too much as he played roughly 1100 minutes last season and scored 3 goals which is basically a goal every fourth full match played and physically he is very strong and can use both feet equally.

        1. As i see it he is a good squad player that can be called upon if needed in certain situations where we for example need to limit the oppositions offense which propably could be the case tomorrow as we will play at a difficult venue.
Sure he will never have leaos speed but he isnt as slow as he sometimes is made to be but he can seem a bit clumpsy due to his large frame and build.

        2. If speed is the key then Adli must be a big concern for you.

But I suspect that Adli gets the benefit of being a new signing (from last season) whereas Pobega immediately gets marked down for being a boring boring youth product!

          1. i think its a conern for pioli and management given the style of players brought into the system. And i dont think anything has changed in strategy,

  1. The paper presumes that***** if pioli knows what’s good for him, adli must keep his position and be flanked by rheinders and musah. Did u guys notice rheinders lost so many balls when he replaced adli at the base of midfield? No one in this team has rheinders characteristics, let him do what he knows best. Regardless of who plays, Milan is always my milan
