CorSport: Milan could keep Caldara for the upcoming season – the motivation

The story of Mattia Caldara has taken another turn as the centre-back could stay at AC Milan for the upcoming season. Amid the lack of potential suitors, the Rossoneri have re-evaluated the situation at the back.

When Matteo Gabbia left for Villarreal on a dry loan, it was reported that Milan would bring in a new centre-back. However, given the struggles with offloading Caldara, the Rossoneri could decide to keep the player.

According to today’s edition of Corriere Dello Sport, as cited by SempreMilan.it, Milan are inclined to keep the defender for next season as the fifth-choice centre-back. The Rossoneri believe he’s good enough for the role and since he’s an Italy-trained player, he would also be useful for the squad lists.

The main reason behind this change of heart, though, is the lack of interest on the market. Verona opened initial talks with Milan as per the newspaper, but they didn’t want to proceed given Caldara’s salary of €2.2m net per season.

Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan) are also reporting this morning that the centre-back likely will remain.
