CorSport: How Milan’s summer decision led to a three-way Theo deputy battle

Questions were asked about signing a left-back in the summer, but there seemed to be confidence from AC Milan in the current options. With Theo Hernandez suspended now, the question has returned.

Theo’s situation at present is making Milan rethink things. Whilst there is confidence that the Frenchman will resign, given repeated statements of intent from both parties, there is also a need to look beyond him.

For this reason, the Rossoneri have begun to look at signing a deputy who would have the quality to replace him eventually, and they have already established a target. However, the question of timing has come forward.

As Corriere dello Sport (via Milan News) writes, the Diavolo ‘gave up’ trying to sign a deputy in the summer, and the decision has come back to bite them. Now, three players are fighting for his position, but none of the options have given much confidence.

There is the choice of Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Alex Jimenez – who was deemed to be Hernandez’s deputy in the summer, but Fonseca has not used the young Spaniard regularly, often looking to other options instead.

Then, there are the Italian options – Davide Bartesaghi and Filippo Terracciano. The latter has been preferred so far by the Portuguese head coach, but he has been criticised for his performances recently. Bartesaghi’s rare exposure to first-team football resulted in a red card last time, but the decision was harsh.

Either way, there are three unconvincing options left to replace the role of the best left-back in the world. Milan must either give confidence to one of the options or find a suitable deputy.
