CorSport: Morata signs with Milan – cost, contract length, salary and expected debut

By Oliver Fisher -

Although the official announcement has not yet arrived, Alvaro Morata can be considered by all intents and purposes a new AC Milan player.

Morata underwent medical tests for his new club in Madrid yesterday and then – with his agents and the intermediary Giuseppe Bozzo – he met the CEO Giorgio Furlani to sign a four-year contract with the Rossoneri.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan), the cost of the transfer fee will be €13m which is the value of his release clause. He will sign a contract until 2028 with the option for a one-year extension and will receive a salary of €5m net per season, bonuses included.

After signing his contract with Milan, Morata left for a vacation with his wife (the Italian Alice Campello) and his children, after winning the European Championship with Spain after a 2-1 victory over England on Sunday.

He will return to Milan only at the beginning of August, when he will start training at Milanello to prepare for his debut which should happen on the 13th at San Siro in the Trofeo Silvio Berlusconi against Monza.

A few days later, on the 17th at 20:45 CEST, Morata will be able to make his competitive debut for the club in the first Serie A game of the season, also at San Siro but this time against Torino.

  1. Very long contract, kind of a gamble. I understand some people’s disappointment, as for me he’s the worst acceptable option out there, maybe along with Fullrug. That is, any slightly weaker would be under qualified for our squad. But we need to judge the mercato as a whole, and see what the other additions might be.

Anyways, welcome to AC Milan Morata, the best club you ever played in your life. Hope you perform accordingly

      1. Zirkzee because that’s who are technical department all wanted. In my eyes Sesko was the best on our list though.

        1. yeah Zirkzee cant even start for Netherlands, barely scored 11 goals is so much better than the captain of Euro Winner Spain who scored 21 club goal last season

logic is always 10/10 with you guys

        2. Cool. They were mine and probably majority of Milan fans top choices.
But, you said that Morata is a gamble and his contract being very long.
Don’t you think that Zirkzee or Sesko would have been even bigger gambles?
Even if Milan signed Zirkzee on their terms, it’s still would have been around 50 mil plus 3.5-4 mil salary. Zirkzee, who I like, has had only 1 good season.
Sesko would have cost even more in transfer fee.
Both of them are super high investment with even a higher risk. High reward but also a high bust possibility. We don’t know how they will perform when the pressure is on them to perform based on the fee and the salary.
Zirkzee played for a team that was expected to be mid table, but surprised everyone.
Sesko wasn’t even a starter at Leipzig.
Again, those are my top choices, but if we are talking about gambles, they are much bigger gambles than Morata.
Morata is a low risk investment. And with him you know what you’ll get and he might even surprise people, because he is used to the pressure of playing for a top team.

          1. Because of their age they would be much easier to offload, and we would be able to get most of our investment back. So in that sense they would be less of a gamble. Plus, forget stats, from what I’ve seen, they’re just better players

          2. Indeed.

Morata is the opposite of a gamble. He’s a sure thing. Someone who has played in this League before. Someone that is in peak physical condition, yet doesn’t rely on overwhelming speed or strength. A tactical player that can play with limited space. And someone who is off one of his best seasons in his career.

            A gamble… I think not.

And yes, while I love Morata (as I’m Spanish), I Too had other names in mind. But people say some silly things on here.

          3. Speak for yourself kiddo. Zrizkee was never even worth 40, much less 55mil plus wages. Sesko just demonstrated at the euros why he can barely get double digits, he has the composure in front of goal of a 9 year old. Much rather have a proven experience striker who will gradually be phased out for Camarda in 3-4 years. 55mil for a striker who scored only 2 goals more than Jovic did coming off the bench? Don’t make me laugh

        3. Just because a player is younger doesn’t mean that is much easier to offload.
There is always going to be a market for Morata to be offloaded. His salary isn’t that high and what Milan would ask to recuperate their investment won’t be that high either, because they only spent 13 mil on him.
Teams know what they will get from Morata when it comes to professionalism and productivity, but he is also a very durable player, who is rarely injured. Only 13 games missed in the last 4 seasons. That’s 3 games per year. Even if he doesn’t perform at Milan, there won’t be a problem to sell him.
If you spend 50-60 mil on Zirkzee or Sesko, it would be much harder to offload them if they flop without taking a significant monetary loss.

    1. How is a player that has played in this league already at a top level, came off the best season of his career at another top level team and is in peak physical condition… a gamble? He’s a sure thing. He knows the Serie A already.

“Worst acceptable” Dude just came off a 21 goal season, with 5 assists. He’s one of the better options, especially for the cost.

I just don’t get people here. I really don’t. Then you want to sign some youngster who barely managed 12 goals last season…

    2. What was giroud when he came to Milan? A sub for Chelsea and arsenal. He ended up playing as a starter for many seasons. Morata has started everywhere he goes at the age of 31and has won everything you possibly can. Why do people keep doubting this signing?

    3. Gamble? LOL. He ain’t 37 yet and is still running his socks off every match. He’ll do just fine on his last year as well.

  2. LOL People whine all the time. Morata is in perfect physical condition and plays in a way that will lean towards longevity. There is almost zero risk with this signing. He doesn’t rely on overwhelming speed and strength.

  3. Glad to see everyone here is optimistic. I hope Morata does well, but I can’t yet share your excitement. And the gamble is the length of the contract. I don’t see him being able to compete at a high level at age 34. At his age you’re one injury away from hanging up your boots (see examples e.g. in Milan)

    1. ?? Morata’s own playing style doesn’t lend him susceptible to injuries. He barely gets injured. He’s at the top of his form. I’m not sure the issue you have with him, maybe it was his time at Juventus (this is what I really suspect). I’m pretty sure if we signed Lukaku, there would have been less complaining… despite Lukaku only being a year younger. And Morata knows this league.

Also what examples? Ibra and Giroud certainly aren’t.

    2. “And the gamble is the length of the contract. I don’t see him being able to compete at a high level at age 34. ”

That says more about yourself (or your understanding of the game & the player) than Morata. You’ll be proven wrong and that’s a fact.

  4. Morata is a good signing on multiple levels. He brings experience and winning mentality to the dressing room, has previous serie A experience, he still has 3-4 good years in him. Is reliable and hard working in Fonseca’s high press system. My issue is signing another old CF doesnt make sense. Also keep in mind, Morata is here until Carmada is ready to be promoted.

  5. He is not best choice but i understand ACM need champion player like him after ibra & giroud to motivate ACM young player. He is not injury prone and can play 30++ match in one season. I hope camarda can learn from him and ibra
