CorSport: Possible chance emerges for Mandzukic as Ibrahimovic could be rested vs. Spezia

By Oliver Fisher -

Striker Mario Mandzukic could get his first start for AC Milan a bit sooner than some had anticipated, according to a report.

The striker joined the Rossoneri during the January transfer window, penning a six-month deal with the option for an extension after having previously been a free agent. Having not played competitively since March – and with that having been in Qatar – there have been some doubts about his fitness levels.

We have seen 55 minutes so far from the Croatia international, with some reports suggesting that he will get his first start a week today in the Europa League Round of 32 first leg against Red Star Belgrade.

This morning’s edition of il Corriere dello Sport (via MilanLive) speculates though that the opportunity for Mandzukic could already come against Spezia. Zlatan Ibrahimovic might be given a game to catch his breath, while starting from the first minute could help Mario gain confidence in the right kind of game.

Regardless of whether he gets the nod on Saturday night it seems his first start is inevitable given the aforementioned Europa League game next week.
