CorSport: PSG watching on as Milan sense discount for Monaco midfielder

By Isak Möller -

Milan desperately need to reinforce the team with a defensive midfielder this summer and several targets have been mentioned lately. Their first choice, however, appears to be Youssouf Fofana even if there could be some competition.

The Rossoneri conceded way too many goals this past season and while the defenders were far from brilliant, they were left exposed too many times. To fix this problem, Paulo Fonseca has asked the management to sign a defensive midfielder for the upcoming season.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews), Fofana is the primary target as he’s set to leave Monaco this summer, having decided not to renew his contract (expires in 2025). As such, Milan are also sensing a good discount and could close the deal at a mere €20m.

Having said that, Paris Saint-Germain are also watching on with great interest and could make a move for the 25-year-old. They could certainly offer a higher salary than Milan but as far as the projects go, the Rossoneri are in a pretty good situation.

In the meantime, Milan are focused on signing a striker and Joshua Zirkzee is the top target, with negotiations now at an advanced stage.

  1. “They could certainly offer a higher salary than Milan but as far as the projects go, the Rossoneri are in a pretty good situation.”
As in ? They’re champions and most likely be champions for years to come while we won a single scudetto since 2011 and are not favourites to win the next one. UCL wise, they’re also more likely to exit the group stage and get to the later rounds.
Project wise, they’re trying to win the UCL every year but they’re very bad at it while ou management specify that our only goal is the top4 of serie A in order to qualify to PSG.
As pointed out PSG can offer more money, they’re french and he is french, they have infinite money and are safe from the FFP while we can’t even outbid mid-table english teams, so I’m failing to understand in what regards our project is in a pretty good situation compared to PSG

    1. The man is probably also thinking about whether and how much he will play in a team like PSG, and on the other hand, Milan can guarantee his position in the starting 11! If you don’t play regularly in the club, it is difficult to compete for the national team. I doubt that they would give him such a higher salary that he would agree to warm the bench.

      1. Depends..right now there is nothing to play for. If he goes for P$$$G cash and plays less in the next season, he can still decide to leave in summer 2025 to a club where he will get more game time in preparation to make WC team.

Idk maybe I’m just over thinking, competition isn’t that sharp in P$$$G imao. If he at 25 can’t bench a teenager then he just isn’t all that good

        1. How? If he’ll be on a 5 year contract and the inflated PSG wages? Some clubs will just come around and pay 50M and match or exceed the 8M per year or whatever that PSG will give him? Going to PSG is like winning the lottery and taking a poison pill at the same time. You will get paid better than almost anywhere else, but if you become unhappy there for lack of playing time or some other reason it’s almost impossible to leave unless they decided to sell you at a steep discount and you decide to take a huge pay cut. Most players are unwilling to take huge pay cuts even if it means more playing time. Everybody wants to have their cake and eat it too.

          1. Actually Paris doesn’t pay that high wages to midfielders.. highest is ruiz with 5M net.. their best midfielder vitinha is on 3M net. That’s Milan lvl wages minus the growth decree

    2. All true, but he would be a starter for us and get a ton of playtime. At PSG, they buy a lot of players every year, and most of them end up warming the bench or not getting enough playing time, leading them to leave after a year or two.

      1. Touché. I just feel we should nurture the ones we have (musah, adli) and buy a proper DM. Bringing more mezzalas will just eat at their minutes.

If cdk case showed anything is that we need to be more patient with our purchases.

        1. Yeah it seems like it will be the strategy, develop the kids. This is what could cost us Mike, Théo, Leao though, the key players who want to win now. I think that players have enough opportunities during practice to show their worth. Adli displayed some good things, at some point he even benched Reijnders but he’s far from a top Serie A midfielder and he came back to the bench. Musah didn’t show anything besides his 40-yd dash. Fofana is an instant upgrade and can rivalise with top midfielders.

Also I would not criticise the management for loaning De Ketelaere, he was clearly lost at Milan. The mistake was that buying clause but anyway it’s a thing of the past now. If they loan Musah or Adli I really wouldn’t mind. I guess Pobega will keep his parking spot at Milanello because we need homegrown players.
