CorSport: Rabiot in, Bennacer out – Milan could make big changes in midfield

By Oliver Fisher -

Adrien Rabiot has emerged as a surprise target for AC Milan and there could be a sale in the midfield department to make room for his possible arrival, a report claims.

It was MilanNews who first reported earlier in the week that Milan had lodged an enquiry with Rabiot’s entourage, given that his contract with Juventus is expiring and there is the need to add another midfielder.

Today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) offers an update regarding Rabiot, claiming that the Frenchman ‘remains at the centre of Milan’s interest’ in view of the summer mercato which opens soon.

There are several things to like about Rabiot in the eyes of the management, such as the fact he would arrive on a free transfer, he is a quality player who can play multiple midfield roles and he has experience.

Who could make room for him in the squad? Ismael Bennacer, as per the newspaper. The Algerian may well be the one sacrificed to fuel the budget and simultaneously create the space to welcome Rabiot.

It will be easier to define the future of Bennacer in the next few weeks compared to other players because he does not feature in a major tournament this summer.

  1. Selling only player that comes close to a natural DM and replacing him with CM sounds really good. Especially when they say that we need more DM players, to have rotation player. Great idea.

    1. Bennacer is not “close to a natural DM”. At least not anymore. He is not strong enough and he gets bullied every time we are against quality opposition. His injuries have taken away the x factor which made him brilliant when he first arrived.

      1. I think he meant as in Bennacer is the only one that could possibly fit the bill. Not that he’s actually a DM. It’s that bad in our team that he’s our guy that’s the closest to a DM

        1. We all got what he meant AND disagree. Bennacer is no DM and didn’t Fonseca use a flat midfield three at Lille anyway?

        2. I don’t even think Bennacer is most fitting as DM of the current players. When you really look at the games, Milan looks more solid defensively when Adli is DM vs whenever Bennacer plays that position. Pioli almost always had to change him out in the second half because Bennacer looks like a confused child in midfield most of the time. And I am saying this while also agreeing that Adli is far from a natural DM. He just possess more of the natural characteristics of a DM, meaning that he can more easily assert himself in there. This just speaks volumes of how much Bennacer has fallen…

          1. Oh for sure. I don’t think any of the current guys are DM material. I’ve been on the site complaining about this since Kessie left lol 😂. I agree about Benny if you’re referring to this season. But as bad as he is, he still has best defensive qualities of any mids. For Adli, I could see your point when he was in the 433, positionally he started to pick up the role ..and then started to leak some crucial goals (PSG and Udinese come to mind). But yea, we def need like two DMs or very defensive minded mids l. I say bri f back Kessie 😁

      2. Bennecar should be sold asap. Bennecar will always struggle with injuries and his form for the past 2 seasons are not good. It will be good if we can replace him and fund that money to improve our squad. At the moment bennecar is neither DM or CM.

        1. By your comments he is someone who can pay 5/8m for his sale

Where we have reijnders, musah,RLC none of them could play in double pivot.

          Who should we sell?

    2. Why are we assuming a natural DM isn’t also on the way? We need a natural DM now regardless. Rabiot replaces Bennacer, natural DM still comes in. I hope.

  2. I’m not against this – Rabiot just had his best season and could be an important player for us for the next few years. Bennacer meanwhile is an injury risk every time he gets tackled, so this makes a lot of sense – assuming we don’t have to go overboard on his salary…

  3. I am all for selling Bennacer, I would drive him to the airport myself, but I don’t take the reports about Rabiot seriously.
Milan already has exactly the same midfielder (if played in his proper position) like Rabiot in Loftus Cheek. Milan has no need for Rabiot.
Also, the report that Juve is offering 7 mil a year but Milan are offering more with 7.5 mil are laughable. If Milan gives any player that kind of money it’s certainly won’t be Rabiot.
I think it’s just a story pushed out there by Rabiot’s mother to get more money from Juventus.
Sell Bennacer to Saudi Arabia and buy both Fofana and Wieffer.

  4. Till you see Ben in the Inter midfield bossing things and then you start to call him a betrayer. I can’t believe how anyone would want him gone when he’s been an integral part of the team albeit in a poor system. Well, I hope we don’t regret it when he leaves. Amazing how Hakan looks like the next best thing at Inter when he was just slightly above average at Milan.

Anyway this is just my opinion though.

  5. Rabiot and Fofana get the midfield vote for me. Bennacer is unfortunately not what we dream him to be. Pobega should also move on.

  6. Benny is a machine. We need to get the best out of him, consistently. Not sell him for someone who’s form will drop because they’re getting old

      1. He came back with a long injury. And he is playing with completly new midfield with whom he never played.

Still you are expecting him to perform first minute ?

We still see him in flashes(his pass to leao in the last matches) that he is still the best in midfield. He spread much better than everyone only adli come close to him in current team.

        1. Yes, Rabiot plays like Adli
So why do we need him
          Bennacer holds better than Adli
Milan doesn’t need a slow midfielder

  7. I don’t understand why people say “sel him” easily after a performance drop after injury.
Inzaghi once got injured and performed badly after recovering. He scored less than 5 goals in that season. I still clearly remember how he even missed an open net. Imagine what would’ve happen if Milan had sold him.
    Just give Bennacer a chance.

  8. Not an apple to apple kind of player. The thing is we don’t have other player that has Isma’s traits. Until that has been adressed, it’s a silly little thought to let him go.

  9. Now I can see that Milan has so many useless fans in here.

Just so quick you all want Benny to be sold. Someone that just came back from injury and you expect him to perform 100%.

    1. I completely agree. He is a world class midfielder. This season gone was always going to be a right off after such a serious injury. But hey most commentors here don’t even know his position!

He was player of the tournament at AFCON ahead of mane, salah etc, playing AM.

He is just so honest he covers defence too, like Modric.
Thats why id always have him as Mezzala.
He can take the ball in tight spaces and always wriggle free.
Those players are so so rare!

It makes me think those “fans” either never watch the games and just live online or they don’t know what they are looking at.

Last year we sold Tonali who was our 5th best player after Leao, Theo, MM and Bennacer

    2. Honestly am totally disappointed with some of us here. Just because he hasn’t come back totally fit you all are calling for his replacement….When a player leaves and joins other team and performs well, we say he is a betrayal. Ben stayed with us through tick and tin. Why have we forgotten this so quickly???

  10. Rabbiot worths 35M-40M in the market. So it would be good ops. Remember Kolo Muani, Marcus Thuram, Dybala, etc? He is versatile left footed Midfielder like Bennacer which can be placed as DM also.

  11. I think the key word moving forward is “upgrade”. Can we upgrade on Benny? Yes. Whether or not that’s Rabiot is another question, but Rabiot is versatile enough to be a part of this team.

    1. Definitely an upgrade on his ability these last two seasons imo. Now, with Kessie on his side in our scudetto season, or season priot, that’s a different question…

      1. Call if you put a better cast around Benny, his game will definitely improve. And by better, I mean more defensive.

But his main enemy at this point is his fitness.

        1. “if you put a better cast around Benny”
If you put a better cats period. That’s why I’m not sold on our current midfield.

  12. It’s a good swap tbh. Don’t know how anyone can complain about Rabbiot. Next time we’ll go after Haaland and people will complain it’s not Mbappe

  13. We will not pay the €7.5m salary, nor will we pay the commission demanded by Rabiot’s mother. His annual cost is €15m including tax.

  14. If we are getting rabiot for bennacer absolutely is the best thing to happen in this summer throwing deadwood and getting quality player amazing job
