CorSport: Rangnick and the ‘foreign curse’ – his chance to break it at Milan

By the looks of it, Ralf Rangnick could be AC Milan’s next manager, linked with the role of sporting director and manager. However, as teams will have little time to prepare for next season, he could join as just a director at first.

As today’s edition of Corriere Dello Sport highlights (via Milanlive.it), the German will have to break a ‘foreign curse’ in case he becomes the new manager. In fact, after the legendary Niels Liedholm, no foreign manager has won a trophy with the club.

There have been five foreign managers after the Swede: Oscar Washington Tabarez (July-December 1996), Fatih Terim (July-November 2001), Leonardo (2009/10 season), Clarence Seedorf (January-June 2014), Sinisa Mihajlovic (July 2015-April 2016).

None of them won a trophy at Milan and only Leonardo lasted an entire season. In addition to conquering Italy with his ground-breaking methods, therefore, Rangnick would have a historical curse to break.

As mentioned, due to the stop of the current season, it won’t be easy to plan for the next one. Meanwhile, Rangnick must also learn Italian as knowing the language is essential for managing in Italy.
