CorSport: Tomori deserted on an island – he is the last man standing at the back

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have been hit by a wave of injuries to the centre-back department and that means that only one senior player in that role remains: Fikayo Tomori.

This morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) writes how Tomori is the the only central defender remaining available to coach Stefano Pioli without having to dip into the youth team, which he will do when Jan-Carlo Simic starts tomorrow.

Malick Thiaw , Simon Kjær , Pierre Kalulu and Marco Pellegrino are out due to injury. Tomori is one of the three starters of this Milan team (the other two are Tijjani Reijnders and Olivier Giroud) who have not been affected, up to now, by any physical problem.

With just over 1,500 minutes collected so far, Tomori has been the busiest player of the entire squad so far. He always played, with the exception of the derby against Inter in the league, which he missed because he was suspended.

In the Champions League he is the only player to have succeeded with more than 15 tackles, with a success rate close to 94%. Tomori will have to lead the entire defensive department of Milan, once again.

As mentioned, he should play alongside Simic, who would thus become the third AC Milan Primavera player to be launched into the First Team in the recent period after Francesco Camarda and Chaka Traorè.

Simic and Tomori, among other things, have already played together in last July’s friendly match against Real Madrid. The alternatives? Move Rade Krunić back or Davide Calabria inside to the central defensive role. Pioli will decide between today and tomorrow.

  1. And yet the city still denies both changing stadiums, or refurbishing San Sirocco. It’s been long noted how poor the pitch and stadium quality has gotten. The physio team also needs to be examined because they’re clearly failing miserably.
