CorSport: Why Fonseca wants Milan and the surprise regarding his salary

AC Milan are expected to announce Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach in the not too distant future, but the salary that he will reportedly earn has raised some eyebrows.

This morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) confirm that the Milan management decided to rely on a coach who can carry forward the tactical project of his predecessor Stefano Pioli, therefore opting against a major overhaul.

Fonseca’s entourage are in contact with the Rossoneri leadership to complete all the bureaucratic steps and then, next week, the announcement of his appointment could arrive. He will sign a two-year deal, therefore until 2026, with an option for a third season.

However, the paper adds that the Portuguese coach will receive a lower salary than Pioli, getting €2.5m net per season plus bonuses which would take it up to €3m. This is considered a surprise, especially for those who expected a more ambitious hire.

The management explored and evaluated various coaching profiles before deciding, in a collegial manner, to focus on Fonseca, who in turn declined Lille’s renewal offer and rejected Olympique Marseille – who also offered him a higher salary – to join Milan.

Fonseca chose Milan for their international reputation and the possibility of playing in the Champions League, while the Diavolo chose him for his style of play and his ability to enhance young players.

The experience he has was also a factor: he won three titles in Ukraine, and has coached in Portugal, Italy and France, while with Roma he also managed to reach a Europa League semi-final.

  1. Well, I’m against Fonseca but have to admit this is “nice” for him to not blindly follow the money but agree to more ambitious project and lower salary.

The only positive we can think of is that’s his last shot for a top club, and as he seems ambitious, he would give 100% to not fail with that role.

    1. Fonseca makes around 2.7 million at Lille.
Milan is an upgrade over Lille so even at a lower salary it’s a no-brainer.
I doubt many other clubs are after him.

  2. Already 2 articles pro Fonseca for today, I m starting to think something is shady here 😂
Cardinale and Furlani doesn’t care about fans, we can sign a 4 mil petition they won’t care .
There has been way better coaches available and yet they got the weakest one, just a quick reminder Pioli left the team on 2st place let’s see if Fonseca can do the same

  3. hmmmm
Fonseca: 3 Ukrainian titles and 1 European Semi-Final on his resume.
Pioli: 1 Scudetto and 1 Champions League Semi-Final
This certainly doesn’t feel like an upgrade when looking on the list of achievements. :Þ

    1. I’m giving him the chance. I mean, at some point we have to take a gamble. Chelsea, ManU, Barcelona, PSG etc all have hired guys with amazing CVs (Conte, Nagglesman, Enrique, Tuchel, Van Gaal, Mou ) etc, all have in some ways failed.
How many titles did Zidane, Pep had before taking over Madrid and Barca? none. How many titles did Alonso had before being the hottest coach now? none. How many did Inzagui had before inter? . Point is, As good as some coaches are, or as bad as some look on paper, sometimes it fits. Even Pioli before Milan. He sucked before us, and look at it now. He did pretty decent considering where we were. So, Let’s see what Fonseca can do. I wish him luck.

      1. It can work, we can never be sure but remember than Pep, Zidane, Alonso and even Inzaghi were young coaches at the time. Fonseca has been coaching for more than 15 years and doesn’t seem to have something impressive to show for it.
Let’s just hope they will provide him with a good team, as in our stars remaining+good signings
