CorSport: Why Milan have returned to Lille star in striker search

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are looking for a new striker to replace Olivier Giroud and they have turned back to Jonathan David for a couple of key reasons, according to a report.

Today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) confirms that Milan will invest in a new centre-forward during the summer transfer window to try and replace Giroud’s goals, given that the Frenchman confirmed his departure yesterday in an emotional interview.

Despite the links with Joshua Zirkzee of Bologna and Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig, it is Jonathan David who is once again rising in the estimations of the Milan management because they see him as an ‘opportunity’.

The reason for that is simply: David’s contract expires in just over a year (30 June 2025) and therefore they believe that the Ligue 1 side could be convinced to part with him for a figure of around €30m, which is way below the asking price for Zirkzee and Sesko.

The paper also highlights  that there have always been good relations between Milan and Lille and, in the past, deals like those for Rafael Leão and Mike Maignan went through quickly. David is wanted by Napoli too, who are looking to replace Victor Osimhen, so there is competitions.

So far this season the Canada international has scored 26 goals and provided nine assists in 46 matches across all competitions, having recovered after a tough first half of the campaign.

    1. He is proven striker with improvement in goal and assist every season. Second top score in France after Mbappe. And this season among those 26 goals he scored, only 2 comes from penalty (so not that much of penalty merchant). Surely that mean something eh?

Proven here, mean that he can score 15+ goals a season, routinely. Zirkzee, for all his quality, right now is one season wonder. And only scored 12 goals in all competition this season. His other notable season was 21/22 in weaker league than France.

Sesko is admirable talent that is better Imo, but his price is the problem. If it remains 50m surely he is worth it and management can pursue him but at >€70m, not so sure. Might as well compare him to Gyokeres at that price range…

Surely David won’t be too bad of an option. His height is the concern, but he won’t be too big a risk at €30m.

      1. Scoring goals in France is easy. Italy, not so much.. and david is a floppy if you put him in Italy.

        Should we buy a floppy?

Might as well give Okafor a nod and see what he does as first strikfor a season.

        1. What do you mean floppy?

Is David better than Zirkzee? Yes
Is Zirkzee better than David? No

We have only seen Zirkzee this season, Jonathan David has been performing and scoring goals in French league.

Same way I can’t pick Motta over Conte or Conceicao.

          1. “Is David better than Zirkzee? Yes
Is Zirkzee better than David? No”

Let’s put it this way: Which of them has the most goals in Serie A? Who knows the league and has shown he can handle the Serie A’s defensive tactics?

History has shown many, many times that people scoring ridiculous amounts of goals in other leagues have failed miserably in Italy. My money goes on David coming one more name on that list.

          2. I wrote a fancy long comment but it was swollen.. David isn’t worth the hassle..nobody bought him so far why should we now? He WILL flop!

      2. Sesko would be risky too. He has a sample size of less than half a season of performing in a top 5 league. His youth and physical traits are what make his price so high, but as of now there’s a lot of projection involved with him. He could be the next Haaland or he could be the next Jovic.

  1. Either David or Broja might be the new striker. I have had the impression that Milan would spend whatever needed on Sesko or Zirkzee, but it might not be true in the end. Time will tell.

  2. Napoli already made agreement with David and I think they are preparing 35mil € + 5 or 10 mil.

Even Romano confirmed the agreement between the player and Napoli. So this post looks like 🧢 for clicks (as always)

Next articles for clicks or episodes of our mercato soap opera will be about Guirassy

    Coming soon!!!

  3. He is not Milan material. He fits into Napoli but Milan needs a true number 9. A target man who can lead the attack. If they are really going for David, just save the money and bet on Okafor 👌

  4. Lol. Yesterday in an article about how Zirkzee was now 90M I commented on how we’d be turning back to David. Tomorrow it will be Giurassy though, when another “journalist” “confirms” we’ll be investing in a striker. The day after that it will be Sesko again. Someone will post a dissertation attacking or defending the move. Someone else will call that person and idiot. And so on and so forth.

    1. LMAO 😂 rinse and repeat….they get the engagement metrics up. Show the value of the site is increasing etc

  5. Market for striker in this day are crazy . Striker that score 10-18 goal / season have asking price 70m euro like zirkzee or sesko ( release clause) . Score more than 20 goal on portugal league like gyokeres have release clause 100m euro . Before gyokeres in the same league also have goncalo & darwin nunez that have price 80-100m euro . Gambling with okafor ,camarda ,jovic for striker next season not bad too so ACM only need to buy LW to compete with leao

    1. Rest assured nobody will pay 70 mln for Zirkzee. As a centre forward he is not that much. He would be ok as a winger or second striker, but as a centre forward he is not worth more than 40 mln; even with today’s prices. Sesko is worth 65 mln because he has the technical capacity to become a top striker.

  6. Like I have said, every 2-3 days the “leading” striker candidacy changes, because that’s on average how long in takes for reader’s interests to last on any one name…

Last 3 days it was all Sesko… Now we’re back to David. in about two days it will be Gyokeres again… and so on.

    1. I think there is some truth in these names. Given the prices and competition, I guess Milan’s management is looking at several options. In the end the budget will decide, and the media can’t provide the budget numbers.

  7. Should really be surprised????

We are owned by Redbird after all.

65-70M for either Sesko or Zirkzee is a dream with these owners. Will never happen

David is back in fashion because he is cheap. Period.

David or Guirassy are what we should be preparing for. Moneyball gents
