Alessandro Costacurta believes that AC Milan’s defeat against Lazio has probably ended the Scudetto race, while he commented on Rafael Leao too.
With their defeat at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday night, Milan passed up a big chance to rekindle the Scudetto race. From a potential five-point deficit had they won, the Rossoneri now sit eight points behind first place with nine games to go.
In a must-win match, Lazio proved more prepared than the Rossoneri, thanks in part to their fans returning to the stadium after a long absence. Speaking of absences, Maurizio Sarri was battling a selection emergency, and yet still managed to keep Milan at bay.
During the post-match coverage of the game on Sky (via Radio Rossonera), Costacurta analysed the Rossoneri’s defeat. The former defender focused on the Scudetto race, now almost definitively over, and on Leao’s attitude after being substituted.
“This is a huge missed opportunity to put pressure on Inter and see how they would have performed. Lazio seemed possessed at the start, when Milan should have been,” he said.
“Then, for goodness sake, they played a decent match, but you can’t give away minutes. Eight points with nine games to go is a lot. If I were Milan, I’d start thinking about the teams behind.
“I was astonished by Pulisic who never served Leao, despite making good movements. Leao wasn’t angry about the substitution but about Pulisic’s failure to pass, Personally, I wouldn’t have taken him off, I would have moved him, but we can’t always wait for him.”
How come 8 points is impossible for Milan to make up but not the teams behind Milan?
