Costacurta happy with Milan’s ‘lucky’ draw against Spurs: “Pioli is on an unstoppable rise”

AC Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta believes that the Rossoneri could have got a far worse draw in the Champions League last 16 than Tottenham,

It was confirmed in today’s draw in Nyon, Switzerland, that Milan will face off against Spurs in the knockout stages of the competition, which will be the Diavolo’s first venture into the last 16 since the 2013-14 season.

Given that Stefano Pioli’s men finished as runners up in their group, they could have got one of the ‘elite’ sides such as Manchester City, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich which would have been very tough to overcome.

Costacurta spoke to TMW at the Golden Boy 2022 awards on the Italian clubs and their draws in the Champions League, with Inter having drawn Porto and Napoli having been paired with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

“All Italians were lucky, not just Milan. There is a very strong coach (Conte), among the best in the world. Fortunately, however, it comes down to the players on the pitch, who are still very strong, but I prefer them to those of Manchester City and Bayern Munich. Conte has demonstrated to be more successful in Italy, but it seems to me that Pioli is on an unstoppable rise,” he said.
