Costacurta believes Leao ‘lacks a bit of leadership’ but new signing will help him

Alessandro Costacurta believes that Rafael Leao is not necessarily the man who can lead AC Milan’s attacking department, and that a new signing could help.

Leao is heading into his sixth season at Milan now and as the highest-paid player in the squad and someone who has worn the captain’s armband in the past few months, there is pressure on him to lead from the front and deliver.

During the game against Torino on Saturday we saw the more frustrating side of the Portuguese winger. Going beyond an intriguing tactical role, the Portuguese missed a couple of chances that could have led to the game having a very different outcome.

Speaking on Sky during the Calciomercato L’Originale segment, the former Milan defender Costacurta spoke about Leao and the question of leaders in the Rossoneri dressing room.

“I think he has grown in a certain sense, not as much as I had hoped but he has made some progress,” he said (via MilanNews).

“He lacks a bit of leadership and the Milan market has gone in that direction. Morata has shown he has it and will probably take some of the responsibility away from Leao. This could be the real coup.”

  1. Leao became lazy. let’s hope we swap with Barcelona on Rafinha pluse they will pay some money to us. I can’t stand anymore when Leao wastes many of goal opportunites and shoots into the air.

    1. I agree,he not good anymore and at europe championship Portugal was better when he off. Its time move him from club, before he will worst and worst

      1. Really zero knowledge of football. When LEAO missed the chance he ran half the field. Other than him only maybe 2 players Vinicius and Mpappe can outrun defenders the way leao did. It’s true he could have done better but when your running half a field which I assume for you is hard to imagine players don’t really have the power to shoot the ball. The first chance he should have scored that I agree he tends to loose concentration during the game and has to work on that

  2. He’s a terrific player but he’s still quite inconsistent, something which I think we all hoped wouldn’t be an issue anymore. As a type you could compare him to a player like Vinicius Jr, but it seems to me that Vini is always ON, always aggressive, where Leao fades in and out too much.Still, he’s the kind of player who adds a flavor to the game that I would really miss, were he not a Milan player.

    1. Plus, let the team play, If the team is good, when the times get taught, he will be ON ;), he has always been when needed the most.

  3. Who is Leao going to lead? Milan ? This guy can’t even lead himself to washroom his attitude on the pitch reminds me of Balotelli “ what am I doing here I’m too good to be here I have better things to do with my life”
    Then go do them…somewhere else

    1. Don’t compare bro. Balo is on another level.

Leao has his issues, but I see that he’s making an effort to improve.
For sure I don’t want us to always depend on him, but let there be am alternative plan in the attack, which is different from getting rid of him.

In my opinion, Pioli was a coach that doesn’t know how to demand from players but gives you too much leeway.
Look at Theo for example, putting on a show on the pitch and taking useless cards? He kinds of annoys you.

Hopefully Fonseca will be a demanding guy.
