Costacurta believes Leao ‘lacks a bit of leadership’ but new signing will help him

Alessandro Costacurta believes that Rafael Leao is not necessarily the man who can lead AC Milan’s attacking department, and that a new signing could help.

Leao is heading into his sixth season at Milan now and as the highest-paid player in the squad and someone who has worn the captain’s armband in the past few months, there is pressure on him to lead from the front and deliver.

During the game against Torino on Saturday we saw the more frustrating side of the Portuguese winger. Going beyond an intriguing tactical role, the Portuguese missed a couple of chances that could have led to the game having a very different outcome.

Speaking on Sky during the Calciomercato L’Originale segment, the former Milan defender Costacurta spoke about Leao and the question of leaders in the Rossoneri dressing room.

“I think he has grown in a certain sense, not as much as I had hoped but he has made some progress,” he said (via MilanNews).

“He lacks a bit of leadership and the Milan market has gone in that direction. Morata has shown he has it and will probably take some of the responsibility away from Leao. This could be the real coup.”
