Billy Costacurta had held Alessandro Bastoni in a high regard before this weekend, but it seems the Inter defender has let the AC Milan legend down…
This weekend’s game between Inter and Juventus has certainly brought up a bit of controversy with many seeing former Milan defender Pierre Kalulu’s red card as wrong. The Frenchman was given a second yellow card for an incident with Bastoni.

However, the video footage shows no contact, but due to it being a second yellow card, the use of VAR was prohibited. A situation which could be vital at the end of the season in the Champions League and Scudetto races.
As a result too, Bastoni has been heavily criticised.
Costacurta’s Maldini comparison
Of course, criticism has come from fans, but professionals also feel similarly, with Costacurta offering his view on the situation to Sky. In fact, as Milan Press relays, the former defender even thought he could be on a similar level to Paolo Maldini previously, but this may have an effect.
“I didn’t expect this kind of exultation from Bastoni, especially for how it happened. I was hurt because I believe that he is going to be part of an elite to which Maldini, Cannavaro and a few others belong.
“It was a mistake, I hope it doesn’t happen again. We must not forget that we are the first to charge this type of game with expectations.”
A “mistake”?
The mere idea that Bastoni, the epitome of a 6/10, would ever be included in the same discussion as world legends like Maldini and Cannavaro is absolutely laughable. He’s not even on the same level as guys like Chiellini.
He is much closer as a defender to Bonucci than to Chielini. He is more known for his passing, crossing and going forward than for his defense, just like Bonucci. Just watch Bastoni play as a CB in back 4 and you’d realize he isn’t that good of a defender.
It’s not a mistake. It’s by design.
Bastoni is not even as good as Costacurta’s left foot! Imagine mentioning Bastoni and il Capitano in the same sentence. Bastoni is not yet up to Bergomi’s level!

Please Billy, Bastoni is maybe a 6 on a great day. Centre backs lauded for passing tend to have their priorities misaligned. Give me a defender who is an average passer over a great passer who got torched by Pulisic, Leao, Yildiz etc any day. Personally I’d take Buorngiorno and Matteo over him all day!
