Costacurta reviews Milan’s leadership group and criticises Theo: “Must drag a team along”

Following the loss against Parma, questions are rife about several areas for AC Milan, and an area in focus is the leaders of the team, after some poor performances from high-ranking members of the squad.

The weekend’s loss will reside in the memories of Milan’s fans for longer than they’d like for all the wrong reasons. Not only did it confirm fears about an awful start but the Rossoneri lost to a team who have been absent from Serie A in four years.

Since the sides last met in 2021, the Diavolo reached a Champions League semi-final and won the Scudetto. From that starting eleven in the 2020/21 season, two players remain in Rossoneri colours, Theo Hernandez and Fikayo Tomori. It is then fair to say that neither player performed well on Saturday, especially the Frenchman, who has been questioned heavily.

Speaking to Sky (via Radio Rossonera), Costacurta spoke about the leadership at the Diavolo, as well as speaking about how the club have operated in the Champions League previously.

A change in the leadership?

“In my opinion, those who were there did not have great personality, because Theo Hernandez – who is the vice-captain – does not have great leadership. He is a very good player. The choice Ibra and AC Milan have to make is to sign someone who has – not only in good times but especially in bad times – the strength to be able to drag the team along.”

Hypothesis of European Milan

“I had a teammate, ‘the panther Seedorf’, who showed himself in Europe more than in the league. There are players who manage to exalt themselves in Europe. Milan became European precisely because of that, because perhaps there are players who in the Italian league are not able to get involved in the right way.”

  1. Théo was arguably one of the best French players at the Euro and played like a world class player, less than two months ago. Zlatan said he’s staying and he’s happy. Two days later he said that he didn’t know if he would stay. Deschamps said before the Euro that Théo lost his enthusiasm at Milan. Théo is paid less than Pavard, Romagnoli or Varane in Serie A and less than Florenzi, Loftus-Cheek, Chukwueze or Fofana at Milan despite never missing a game and playing 90 minutes twice a week. Théo was competing for Serie A and UCL final rounds not long ago and is now competing for top 4 and UCL appearance. Théo’s new coach is Paulo Fonseca from Lille, 4th in Ligue 1 last season. I guess football players can also have job burnouts.

    1. Theo is paid more than varane and romagnoli.
And besides he’s negotiating for a raise since his contract is running low..
And has the salary as chucku and ruben but a million more than fofana and florenzi.
Don’t make shît up, or if you want to, make believable shìt up. You’ll never make it as a writer if you don’t give it your all.
Theo is just tired from vacation and needs a minute to get back in form. Tis normal for athletes

      1. It seems that we don’t have the same source about the salaries, chill out. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s you but anyway Théo is underpaid right now and seems to play without motivation. Everything else are plain facts, from Deschamps to Théo saying that he didn’t know if he would stay or leave. Football players are not assets, they’re human beings with their own psychological issues at times.

        1. My source is right. its all validated.
Meh, he gets paid plenty. He signed the contract in 2022 until 2026.
He said, she said arent facts. I can go outside and shout ‘i have 3 ballz not 2’. Doesnt make it a fact.

    2. He will get his new contract when players are off the books but now the fact his defense has gone down each of the last 5 years is more obvious and …all of his teammates are watching the same videos everyone else is so I’m not sure what happens with the vice-captain status…Mike, tomori, Marata stand out as high charisma. Florenzi was very important last year…he was the only player who would stand up for his teammates. Even when musah was punched by nandez everyone stood around like nothing happened…I assumed that was a one off, but there is definitely a lack of fight for the team. If he can no longer protect Leao…that whole side of the field is at risk. The team is very strong. If they had a left back over the weekend they come away with points

      1. If this is how Theo tries to convince he needs a bigger paycheck he will not be getting that from his current team, that’s for sure.

    1. I blame the management because they don’t want to big coach such as Sari, conte and zabei they were all available and world class coaches but they chose someone who was in Seria A with Roma and dnt do nothing…

  2. TBH, We lack players who play with their heart for Milan, as a captain you can not be jogging back to defend the goal. We need players who are playing with their heart and who are proud to play for Milan and who can be leader

    1. And what does it mean to be captain of this Milan? Get the tremendous honor of wearing the new green/pink jersey on commercials? What can go wrong with a business oriented management? I guess we have the answer.

      1. THIS Milan? Probably nothing as there are players who don’t give a **** about the team. And some of these players were supposed to be the stars and leaders. When those guys don’t show up, that will have an effect on the others.

        1. And how the f*** does “business orientated management” affect the attitude of players? Sure, blame the suits when the players don’t care how the team does. Easy and convenient as it suits your narrative on how everything is the managements fault. Even when Leao misses a 1-on-1 it’s the managements fault.

The attitude issue we saw in the two matches are 100% on the players themselves.

  3. At the very least, Calabria needs to be revoked as captain before any progress can be made with the rest of the team. It’s understandable that Theo doesn’t want to be the one cleaning up others’ messes.

    1. Right, off all the things to fix right now, calabria being the captain is an issue?
Jesus the people on here. I’m totally baffled how we as a society keep going with snowflakes like this living and breathing

  4. Theo is maybe or can only be a captian, but not a leader. This team lacks in leadership and players with adequate expirience.
