Costacurta singles out Thiaw as Milan ‘must intervene’ in defence: “Major flaw”

Billy Costacurta has criticised Malick Thiaw in the past and after yesterday’s 2-2 draw against Fiorentina, the AC Milan legend singled out the German international again.

Milan conceded two goals within the first ten minutes of yesterday’s game, one of which was an own-goal from Thiaw, and the defending wasn’t exactly brilliant on the second goal either. As such, Thiaw and his colleagues received heavy criticism from the papers this morning.

Speaking live on Sky Italia after the game, as transcribed by MilanNews, Costacurta shared his thoughts on Milkan’s situation and urged them to ‘intervene’ in defende. Above all, he highlighted the weird movement of Thiaw.

“Milan can’t find continuity because they don’t have the concentration for 90 minutes. It’s a major flaw of some players that affects the team. Milan must intervene in defence. I can’t understand the movement of Thiaw,” he stated.

Indeed, the German international took up a strange position on the second goal, pushing up just before Moise Kean received the ball. It’s not the first time that Costacurta has criticised him either, almost ending up in an argument with Matteo Gabbia at the start of last year.

  1. Milan entire back line needs to be rebuilt. Thiaw, Tomori, Pavlovic and Gabbia are not good enough.

Theo has to go. Walker is on a high salary and not worth keeping. Florenzi injury prone.

So the entire back line has to be revamped.

  2. AGREE 100 % with ZionTrain !!! ( not to hard to realize that ??? …….. for most soccer people,,defence has been bleeding goals for two seasons now )

  3. Well , i wonder why he didn’t call out Theo too for second goal? He tottaly forgot to cover Dodo ,he was chasing ghosts there

    1. The fiorentina 2nd goal shouldn’t happen if thiaw not too late to make offside entrapment. If you watch this game, you know that the VAR check replay was between fiorentina left back and thiaw.

    1. Your comment just revealed how shallow your knowledge on football is. If you dont know who costacurta is, i suggest you do some research first before questioning him on defending

  4. The ‘hero to zero’ story has been consistently defining our season and this could be told for almost all these players. Not a single one of them has been able to build on a good spell and this has made it very difficult to call the 1st eleven all season. A real headache in any coach’s book. Leao runs riot a few games and disappears the next few, Gabbia commands the defence for a number of games and goes completely timid the next few games…and this common thread runs through the entire team. No continuity, no chemistry…How do you make a call on who should stay and who should go (except Emmerson of course). Either you sell 80% of this team or let the coach go.

    1. Everyone are being hero to zero coz they legend figure already out. The man called Maldini.

Zlatan ? He makes for himself . The godly boy.

  5. RE: bb and theo

I wonder how man finishes by the opponent have been due to an excellent assist from the left side? (the one theo is supposed to protect)

  6. Like I said many times, thiaw should start from the bench, he’s not Milan level defender I guess.
    1. He’s should block before hakan goal V inter
    2. He makes the third own goal this season, I forget who is Milan defender make this record.
    3. He too late to make offside entrapment before fiorentina 2nd goal.
    4. Sell it to bundesliga.

Sergio should start to duo tomori / and the beast pavlovic.

  7. Thiaw this season had his best showing paired with Gabbia. I don’t understand all this rotation at the back. The pair playing must establish connection and understanding between each other and to achieve that they must play together on a regular basis. Fonzy was doing the same, rotating at the back week in week out. Wtf?!

Thiaw is like Bonucci – he was good when he played with a reliable partner like Chiellini but leading defense line by himself? Never. He always flopped.

  8. Our best defender this season and the only one with margins of improvement. He still makes mistakes, but way less than Tomori and Pavlovic. With Thiaw-Gabbia we concede less than 1 goal per goal on average, when either Tomori or Pavlovic are on the pitch we are close to 2. It cannot be a coincidence.

  9. The real problem is the coach, he alternates the center backs every time, no consistency in that back which I know is causing the lack of synergy. They cannot detect their run or move together, Milan’s major problem is the Coach, Sergio. He’s tactically imbalance, it’s even good he subbed Musah first half in Florentina’s game, that guy does not deserve to be in Milan’s team and secondly, he should always start Abraham and forget about Gimenez and Joao Felix. We need Tijjani to move forward as normal and not make him go deep in the midfield. Sergio tactical discipline is poor, i just hope he can give us the coppa italia to qualify for Europe.

  10. echoing your thoughts @Ubills MUsah needs to go, he is not Milan material let him go elsewhere and improve on his football and be ablessing tot hem not this Milan and yes we need Tijjani to move forward in the middle.
Joao Felix isnt a player we need at this time, his inconsistensy screams more than LEao, and even that one too needs to go as well. SAntiago Gimenez is not a striker fit for our system, w dont have the best midfielders and wingers to feed him steady balls in the 18 yard box. His link-up play is bad so he cant function outside the opponents box..
Lastly the entire backline needs to go, we need to revamp it, and we hope and pray the new coach would get the good sense not to be rotating the centre backs like his predecessors did
