“Fired Maldini overnight” – Cuomo urges Cardinale to take action with Milan ‘mediocre’

After the treatment of Paolo Maldini, calls have been made for AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale to do the same with Giorgio Furlani.

The sacking of Maldini is something that many Milan fans have never gotten over. Partially because of who it is, the work he did in a director role for the club and what has happened since. However, the other aspect was the manner in which it came about.

Speaking in an interview months after the sacking, Maldini believed that the plan to part ways was a few months in the making, perhaps longer. As you’d imagine, it is not an unpopular viewpoint and the Rossoneri, since then, have only really headed one way.

Overhaul needed

Despite this, there has been no major overhaul of the management system, which has deepened frustrations and potentially tarnished relations between the owner and fans. Speaking to MilanNews, Michael Cuomo had his say on the management, focusing on the future of Furlani.

“AC Milan’s season took a turn for the worse after the Bastoni-Kalulu affair: Allegri did everything he could to keep AC Milan out of the refereeing mess, even leaking rumors about alleged phone calls to the AIA.

“Then there was Parma, with Troilo’s goal validated. Then there was the AC Milan of the two heads. Then Real Madrid on Allegri. Then again, Tare was in the balance. At that point, football was no longer discussed, not because of those, like us, who are outside Casa Milan, but because of those who live on the top floor of that building.

“All this dust is now hidden under a rug called ‘lunch at the office’: I don’t think anyone else goes to the office on a weekly basis. You go to the office when there’s a problem, the work week is lived and developed at the training center.

“If Cardinale, who has already demonstrated his ability to fire Maldini overnight, fails to take action against those managing this mediocre AC Milan on and off the pitch by the first possible post-season date, namely Monday, May 25, we will be forced to believe that, as was said some time ago, there are higher-level discussions that establish the internal roles of the club.”
