De Ketelaere says he has waited ‘a long time’ for that scoring feeling after Atalanta debut

By Euan Burns -

Charles De Ketelaere has explained that he has been waiting a long time for the feeling of scoring a goal after he got off to a perfect start for Atalanta.

The AC Milan attacker is currently on loan at Atalanta from the Rossoneri and he made his debut from the bench away at Sassuolo on the opening weekend.

The Belgian was speaking to Il Corriere della Sera (via Football Italia) when he was asked about the feeling of getting his first goal for La Dea. His header made it 1-0 to Atalanta with less than 10 minutes to play in Reggio Emilia.

“I’ve been waiting for feelings like this for a long time, I wanted to score and I am happy it helped the team win the game,” he said

There is a feeling that De Ketelaere has got somewhere that he can shine now that he has joined a tactical setup that better suits his strengths.

There is no space for him in Stefano Pioli’s new 4-3-3 and that is largely why he was moved on. De Ketelaere spoke glowingly about Gian Piero Gasperini.

“I spoke to the coach about my playing style and tried to do what he wanted,” the Belgian said.

“I like Gasperini’s playing style and it’s one of the reasons why I came here. Atalanta are a great team and I want to do well. This is a great opportunity for me and I want to do well.”

  1. I always believe that a great coach is someone who can bring out the best in his players and create a formation/ tactic that suits his players, not the other way around. So I guess Pioli is …

    1. It just happen that CDK’s best position is available in Gasperini’s usual formation. It has nothing to do with bringing out the potential or creating formation.

      1. But it does. We’ve been running 4231 for years when that wasn’t our best formation, just what pioli has been comfortable with.

          1. Exactly. And That’s the whole thing that bothers be. It’s such a disconnect even up to now that they’re having. My guess the same fate will befall Puli (still haven’t locked down a position for him) and one of the mids they bought 🤦‍♂️

      1. Because it is Atalanta, a selling team. You really are something hahahah. Do you think that last teams on the Serie A tables have the worst coaches and that the best one is the one that won? 🤣🤣🤣

    2. Great coach that never win anything and get sacked in preseason ( gasperini) . Just because he use 352 with duo striker so CDK can score and he is called great coach ? If he is great coach , we already see him coaching big club in europe not seller club that dont have target in serie A

      1. I think they probably mean great at developing young talents. The conditions at Atalanta are ripe for such development, at Milan there’s no time due to ambition and demands of the fans

  2. sometimes best if coach just let player express himself free. i mean, even with theo, tbh with pioli giving certain directives, yes theo has improved defensively but that has limited the kind of the damage he is designed to do.
its the same with CDK, he had a more or less free role in Brugge, then he is tasked to do something he is not used to. its same with adli too.
its probably for the best because CDK has a coach now who understand or is willing to allow him to play the way he is good at while fitting him in their team. its their gain our loss

  3. “I spoke to the coach about my playing style and tried to do what he wanted,” the Belgian said.

Let me gaze into my crystal ball…

Hmmm… At the end of the season, Atalanta will ask for a discount to reduce the agreed fees. CdK will prefer Atalanta. Milan will hold out.

Atalanta will persuade CdK that for him to get the salary increase, Milan have to drop their price. At the end of the day, because CdK doesn’t want to come to Milan with Pioli still around, Milan will try to sell to another club.

CdK will refuse the move and Milan will sell cheap to Atalanta. A couple of seasons later Atalanta will sell CdK to Man City or Bayern or PSG for a humongous fee.

  4. @nino you must be a seer, as much as funny and truthfully ironic as it sounds….you have just call a spade a spade and nail the. Coffin on its head, in summary it shows the rashness of the management and the coach especially.

  5. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t. Pioli could have tried to play him more as a striker or secondary or false 9 but he just didn’t fit into the team. Pioli also brought up theo, tonali, bennacer so you can’t say he doesn’t know how to get the best out of his young players. Just didn’t work out

    1. Yeah sure. He had no other players to play. It isn’t like he gave the young players a chance over old players. But he only played the players that the management brought him. I mean Theo for example, he was the only real left back in the team, what was Pioli going to do but play him? He didn’t develop a thing, Theo just played great since he came…

  6. Giancarlo, weren’t you insulting me for saying this guy will go to City or Madrid for over 80M within’ 3 seasons? Just watch how right I am. Visible talent, same like Paqueta. It is impossible not to see it if you know football at all…

  7. not good enough for Milan & he’s Maldini big mistake cz Pioli is grand-master of coach who trust youngster the most
