GdS: De Ketelaere the symbol of a mercato that has produced very little

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s Scudetto defence never really got going this season while fans and sections of the media point fingers at the 2022 summer transfer window.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) writes how the Rossoneri remain clinging to fourth place, but have to watch their backs and a top four spot is far from guaranteed at this stage.

Much could also depend on the choices made during the summer market, one in which Milan had the highest net spend of any Serie A side as the champions but has also yielded very little in terms of contributions from those who arrived.

Charles De Ketelaere is the biggest enigma as he has not yet shown what was expected after Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara negotiated for weeks with Club Brugge before paying €32m plus €3m in bonuses to sign him.

The Belgian has made 31 appearances for Milan but still has zero goals despite scoring 18 goals last season. Time is definitely on his side and the 22-year-old is having his first experience away from his country, but Stefano Pioli consistently prefers the inconsistent Brahim Diaz and that speaks volumes.
