SM: More details emerge of latest Maignan injury – will miss Salernitana match

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan suffered yet another injury in training which means he will almost certainly miss the final game of the season against Salernitana.

Initial reports claimed that he had injured one of his fingers and SempreMilan.it has confirmed on Twitter that he dislocated the fifth finger on his left hand and a scan has already taken place which ruled out a fracture.

The fact there is no fracture will not help when it comes to the Salernitana match on Saturday, but it is good news for Maignan when it comes to the France squad for Euro 2024.

Marco Sportiello will continue to fill in for Maignan, as he has done in recent games whilst the former Lille man was recovering from a muscular issue. His return should have come against the Granata in what should be Stefano Pioli’s final game in charge.

The injury will only add to some of the exasperation around Maignan and his injury record this seaosn, which has been extensive for a goalkeeper. Given the transfer speculation around him, it is not implausible that he has played his last game for the club.

Bayern Munich have been linked with Maignan during the latter half of the season.

  1. Another injury??? LMAO!!! Your can’t make this stuff up. Almost as injury prone as Sensi…

He isn’t getting any younger either. Would be wise to find a buyer. NOW.

  2. I never saw a goalkeeper to have so mant injuries… meanwhile Juventus already got Motta and De Grigorio, I don’t think any big team will pay 40 mil for Mike after this season, so they will sell Leao or Theo this summer

        1. Really good goalie. But you have to take in consideration that he will miss half of the season cause of injuries. So you must have a really good second goalkeeper.

          1. Sportiello has come up really good. So I think we do need to sell Mike and get a new starter. Mike isn’t getting any younger and I think injury issues will still be a problem. I think we can get 45-50 million for him.

  3. And people get mad when someone says that he should be sold along with Bennacer.
    The best ability is availability.
Both of them are injury prone. Don’t care how good people think they are, unless they are on the pitch none of it matters.
Totti said the same thing about Dybala. Great player but you can’t count on him to be available when you need him.
Sell both of them while their value hasn’t plummeted.

    1. I agree but they have to be sold for a fairly good price (north of 30M for each).
And in Bennacer’s case, since he is the only remaining midfielder we have who can defend, selling him means we should get either 2 DMs or 1DM and a box-to-box/CM with good defensive abilities.

  4. I think it’s time we consider offers and look at other keepers. Not sure who. Sportiello had been good, but we need a starter. Some say Di Gregorio but unsure.

  5. Most ppl knew of Mike injury proneness prior to season start and some wouldn’t hv mind if he was the one to be sold instead. He’d still have fetched the 60m at the time. Currently I’m not sure though we can get that amount but 40m with future clause ain’t bad

    1. I think it’s more feasible for all parties involved to get 40M + performance/appearance bonuses, to protect both parties, instead of future sell on fees.

I don’t think keepers would have much of resale value, even if he maintained his quality and performance, he won’t be fetching north of 30M after hitting 30+ and with huge salary attached.

    2. 40M will essentially allow us to replace him and make enough profit to boost our summer budget which will (theoritically at least) allow us to go for better targets in the DM and CF departments. We already almost guaranteed 35M between CDK and Saelemakers, another 40M will make it around 75M perhaps 80M without considering the budget.
IMO Maignan should be the player to be put on the market, Leao and Theo should be untouchable and we should renew to Theo.
If we have to sell other players, I’d say Thiaw personally, provided we get a good sum out of him, otherwise no. Tomori, Gabbia and Simic are a no for me.
I’m hesitant towards Bennacer, I do like his contribution, but he might have become too much of an injury prone player. However selling him means we should get either 2 DMs or 1DM and a box-to-box/CM with good defensive abilities.
