Di Canio blasts Theo and Leao for conduct in Lazio game: “This is a disgrace”

By Oliver Fisher -

Paolo Di Canio has branded Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao ‘a disgrace’ for the way they conducted themselves during the second half of the game against Lazio.

The ‘cooling break saga’ has been dominating the media headlines and the social media feeds of Milan fans since Saturday night’s game in the capital, with a lot of differing opinions on what went on.

Shortly after the goal to make it 2-2, the image showed Theo and Leao on their own on one side of the field while everyone else gathered near their coaches for a team-talk, and the fall-out rages on even if those involved tried to pour cold water on things.

Di Canio spoke on the Sky Calcio Club broadcast alongside Fabio Capello and he was asked for his thoughts on the incident, which Football Italia have translated below.

“I hear people say that they are just kids and that’s how it goes, (but they are) worth 8 million, to Milan,” he began.

“If something like this happens after work, even with my friends messing around and playing, if someone sits there on the side with his belly hanging out, I tell them: ‘hey, what are you doing? Come and help us’. And you have to pay €10 to play on the pitch. It’s a disgrace.

“The captain starts piping up, as if to say ‘oh look at this’. It delegitimises the situation. The coach, the teammates who were put down by that attitude, in my day, would have been pinned up against the wall and punched. It’s a disgrace.”

    1. These former players are now part of the media machine, always outraged, always looking for the next drama, always trying to unsettle teams.

  1. 1. The positive locker room atmosphere was one of our major assests, one of Pioli’s greatest achievements, and Fonseca seems to have damaged it in two weeks.
    2. We are talking about two athletes that came to training on their off days during Pioli. Now they seem under motivated.
    3. Fonseca wanted to come out big, but in the end looked very small. From the sidelines it looks like he’s way out of depth.
    4. I don’t understand all the criticism aimed on Leao. Yes, he wasn’t at his best, but he had a decent couple of games. Very dangerous against Torino, an assist against Parma, and a goal against Lazio. To me it seemed Fonseca read the sports section and figured out that benching our two top players might make him look good.

    1. 1. In a sense it was something that Pioli managed to create, but don’t forget the big role Maldini had. Also under Pioli, Leao and Theo always had mood swings and lazy games, but Pioli let them get away with that while Fonseca decided he’s having none of that.
      2. You could say they started to become less and less motivated since RedBird took over and sacked Maldini, and now Pioli is also gone. In a sense, you could say nothing remained of the Milan that brought them in. That’s still not an excuse to be lazy. If they want to leave, I’ll respect that, but they still have to give 100% on the field.
      3. True. Things aren’t going well for Fonseca and I doubt things are going to improve.
      4. The problem is not about Leao or Theo looking good for a couple of actions. Many of us could tell how desintrested they looked most of time and how lazy they were during the recovery phases and with certain passes. They’re barely trying, the difference is that a 30% Leao is better than a 90% Okafor.

    2. untrue. 2 years of up and downs is what broke the locker room atmosphere. I mean we dont know what is or isnt goin on in the locker room and we never will, but if the atmosphere was so d@mn positive just a simple change of staff would not lead to a major breakdown..
Thats like changing the tires on your car and after your whole machine goes up in flames..

As for the #3 we saw time and again when pioli was just standing there yelling ‘dai dai dai’. It was pretty f evident, 2 me, the players did not do what they were supposed to do. Its the same right now. I bet in training they play like kings. Then gamenight comes and they play like a relegation side.. We all know they have the quality to do better.
Something else is amiss, not Fonseca
