Di Marzio: Fonseca’s Milan arrival delayed until July – the reason behind the wait

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan will appoint Paulo Fonseca as their next head coach shortly. However, they will have to wait until July for him to arrive fully, Gianluca Di Marzio states.

It seems that Milan have settled on their next head coach to take the reigns from Stefano Pioli, and it will be Fonseca. The Portuguese manager has a difficult task ahead of him, but he has a strong base to work from.

Regardless of the events of this season, it can be argued that the Rossoneri have a more complete side than they have in previous seasons, and with further investment, this will only be bettered as time progresses.

Therefore, perhaps now Pioli is leaving at the optimal time. Results, of course, have been the poor part of the season, but this is where a new coach can inspire and offer new ideas to the players, which will be welcomed.

The areas that need investment are already known, so the handover period will be at a minimum in that respect, but he will not be with the squad until July, according to Di Marzio (via Milan News).

As the journalist states, he will arrive in Italy after the 6th of July, due to ‘tax reasons’, but there are no qualms about this.

  1. Juve with motta, inter with simone, napoli with conte, atalanta with gasperini, milan with fonseca, interesting

      1. Lets hope it is just media excuse because their rumour is incorrect and Milan still evaluate many other options.

    1. Disgusting how management could jus settle for average instead of striving ror great .. all the good coaches available and we get stuck wit this BS coach

    2. Gasperini & Inzaghi won’t be starting from scratch and I bet Motta doesn’t have a vacation until the season starts like Fonseca. Guess which of the teams will be starting REALLY badly?

      1. The players won’t be back from EUROs or holidays until we’ll after that, what’s he going to do other than picking out furnishings for his office and watching a lot of video (that he’s probably already doing)? Yes, Conte will already have alienated half of Napoli’s team by then but have some perspective here.

        1. Just weird all around.

If the main reason is economic, that doesn’t make any sense. This dude (or whoever is going to be appointed, really) is going to be a new coach, he would need TIME to acclimatize to the working environment of the club. That extra one month could prove valuable – where he could hopefully discuss with the rest of the management and plan ahead.

He’s not early to pick out furnishing for his office. Isn’t it better to have an early start nevertheless? In the space of a month, a potential player might become available and if he’s already working in close relation with the new managements, we might be able to pounce. He could also use this ‘extra’ month to just build relationship with the players and the good fellows who works at Milanello and possibly laying out things that he deemed important etc. There is gonna be a change of culture, considering Pioli has been serving for 5 years.

Having a coach installed before the team embarks for their NT/holidays will also provide clarity for everyone involved. Other teams have started their planning for the season ahead, we’re already too late as it is, why make it another month late to get thing started?!

Are we seriously going to ignore all these important intangibles for the sake of saving a few million (hundred thousands?) quid? Are we that broke?!

  2. As if things are not bad enough already. Oh well, maybe there’s something else behind and we are in for another surprise.

  3. LOL…gotta save on those taxes Gerry!!!!

I think it’s pretty telling that we only offered Fonseca a 2 year agreement.

IF management really believed that Fonseca is the guy to lead us to TITLES – a short term 2 year deal doesn’t inspire any confidence nor job security.

    Embarassing

  4. Day after day, After maldini left, this team is going to be banter era 2.0. Im not joking, roma with de rossi, inter-simeone, napoli-conte, juventus-motta, and gasperini-atalanta. How come we beat them with fonseca? We just want UCL spot but never be title contender. Mid mindset with cheap profit…

    1. They all going all out this summer, I personaly will hold spending spree until next 2 year when competition geting weaker. Coz there is no point invest lot of money when the chance super slim. (*red bird is investment company, not some random typhoon or billionaire who splash money for fun)

    2. Whats funny? Last Maldini tenure we ended up 5th place (4th thanks to juve) and this season we ended 2nd place, so which one is the banter era?

  5. I would rather choose Bonera than Fonseca.

What Fonseca can bring to Milan?

If management want low salary coach, than better use coach from inside

  6. Low wages (capped at 3m annually), no voice, not demanding, willing to work with what is already available/provides, and good at developing lesser known players. When the media says Fonseca checks off all the boxes this is what it means.

  7. So not only we chose Fonseca out of all available coaches out there, not only his wage is pretty much on a Fiorentina level, not only we don’t seem eager to renew to our best players because of a 5M cap, but the coach won’t be able to work ASAP with the team because of some “taxes” ?
I’m starting to think that even I have a bigger budget than Milan.
    “Financially stable” my a$$
