Di Marzio: Hummels rejects Bologna – Milan ‘could think about it’ under one condition

By Oliver Fisher -

Mats Hummels is still without a club and he has rejected an offer from Bologna, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, while AC Milan cannot be ruled out as a destination.

According to Di Marzio (via Radio Rossonera), Hummels took some time to evaluate the offer from Bologna after leaving Borussia Dortmund but he eventually decided to respectfully decline it, implying he is looking for a different experience.

The Rossoblu were and are not the only team interested in Hummels. The journalist added that ‘in Italy there remains the timid interest of Roma’ given Daniele De Rossi’s admiration, even though the Giallorossi ‘have not yet made a concrete offer’ for the defender.

Milan ‘could think about it in case they had to sell another defender’ after the arrival of Strahinja Pavlovic from Red Bull Salzburg, though at the moment things seem cooler on that front given Newcastle United have turned from Malick Thiaw to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Bild last month claimed that the Rossoneri are thinking of Hummels as an experienced reinforcement for the rearguard and as someone who could potentially replace Simon Kjaer, while La Repubblica stated just a few days ago that the German is very much still on the management’s radar.

  1. I think this would be a good acquisition for the right salary. Think his experience will bring alot to the defence and the dressing room to this young team, especially in the champions league

    1. That department is complete, while should we jampack the defense that some won’t even get a chance to play at the end you keep unhappy players… Or lose young future talents trying to keep the ageing experience ones and the future cough out many millions to buy them.

      1. I didn’t know that, thanks.
But it’s weird considering Bologna Will play ucl next season.
But then again Motta left, so that might br an issue for him.

  2. We’ve just signed a f’ing CB!

I did say I would support his signing because of the experience he’d bring particularly after losing Kjaer and Giroud (and Ibra before them).

Instead we signed Pavlović, who seems good and all but hasn’t ever won any major tournament (outside of Austria and Serbia).

Again it’s not about some technical ability that a player may or may not have, but more intangible things like their experience or how they compliment other players.

That’s ultimately what makes a successful TEAM not just a random collection of players.

This is why the experience of the existing players is so hard to replace – because they already know what it is to play with the club and with the players at the club.

Nobody has a clue how some new player will interact with the other players which is why most new transfers don’t ‘work out’ – ‘don’t work’ as in fail to produce the same or better form for their new club.

And we know this because of the sheer volume of transfers we see.

And we know this because if transfers did work out there wouldn’t be the need to constantly revisit the same positions over and over and over again.

And we know this because of all of the transfer ‘flops’ we see and seemingly take such pleasure in every single transfer window.

Whether or not Pavlović ‘works out’ or he spells the end for Gabbia OR Tomori OR Thiaw OR Kalulu OR Simic OR whatever other CBs we have is impossible to know. Certainly signing Hummels now would make everyone’s life more difficult.

    Enough already.

      1. Why do you keep defending our massive squad?

Are you looking forward to another round of bashing our players this season when they don’t meet your lofty expectations?

        1. Me bashing? We’ve gotten rid of Krunic and I’ve realized criticizing Leao won’t fix his flaws so… When was the last time I’ve been bashing our players? Origi & Ballo-Toure don’t count as they can’t even be consider as players but more of a rash one can’t get rid of.

          1. So you admit to have slagged off Krunic and Leao.

            Some fan.

Interestingly Krunic had the highest interception rate of our midfielders and he only played a few games….

And our midfield collapsed after he left.

            But good times.’

        2. You know what’s funny? Our wage bill is much lower than other competitors and we actually did release a fair number of players already.

Caldara (high wage earner), Kjaer, Maldini, simic and Mirante left.

You seem to be seem to behind the times.

          1. “Who gives a f’ck about a wage bill.

This is not about money. It’s not a game of Monopoly.”

UEFA does. The management does. In the long run fans should do because the way Li & Berlusconi ran the club it was 5 minutes away from being bankrupt. But sure, that wouldn’t have made a difference, right? 😀

    1. I also see problems with our large squad. We need to let go of a few players. I would suggest having 2 players for each position (maybe 1-2 more) and then filling the rest with players from Milan Futuro. Of course, we have quite a few games in the upcoming season. Nevertheless, I believe it is important to integrate young players and give them playing time. Fonseca could be the ideal type for this. And it would solve our problem of not having enough Italians in the long run.

      1. Yea I agree with you and Maldini’s Heir about the squad size. At some point we’ll have to ignore some players like Balo and Origi as not in the team plan and we’ll still have a huge squad and need to trim to make regulations/lists. 1-2 per position with overlap would be ideal.

    2. Pavlovic hasn’t won a major tournament? He’s a young player, dude. You are actually bashing on him? Many of the players we have signed who turned out to be very successful didn’t win anything prior.

He came here on a low transfer fee and has a relatively low wage (1.8m if I recall). He’s very proficient and a strong defender. Our issue last season was our defense. With Caldara, Simic and Kjaer leaving it made perfect sense to sign him. Three out, one in. Thiaw may also still leave.

      1. I am not ‘bashing’ him, I am merely pointing out why I was supportive of Hummels notwithstanding my concerns about the number of CBs we have.

Hummels had specific experience which the squad lacks i.e. what we need from new signings.

The fact that Pavlović is young and therefore hasn’t won any major tournaments is exactly why I question his signing.

But again we see people giving the benefit of doubt to new signings whilst writing off our existing players and youth players.

The bias towards new signings is obvious.

  3. Mr Angry thinks signing Pavlovic is disruptive. We lost three CBs. Caldara (wow so overpaid, wasn’t he paid 4m a season?), Kjaer and Simic left. Thiaw still may exit.

So we actually have a net savings in defense. We trimmed the squad already.

Origi and Ballo-Toure are a problem, but we had multiple departures.

    1. Thiaw won’t exit. Newcastle has signed another player. They would have been stupid for signing Thiaw who is very error-prone. We’re stuck with him. Sometimes he plays well but some other times he is a disaster. I think Gabbia is much better but for some reason that I can’t comprehend, Gabbia seems to be under him in the pecking order.

      1. It’s simple.

Gabbia is a youth product and therefore will always be discriminated against by the money men but also most disappointingly fans who will always prefer the shiny new players over their incumbents.

    2. Who is angry?

Seemingly other people whenever I question the transfer market to the point that you seem incapable of basic comprehension.

I don’t care about ‘net savings’ or money, I only care about football.

And if you all care about is money then presumably you want to stop us spending it on new signings we don’t need.
